I think it was because of Jon's battle cry they broke formation and dispersed leading to the firemanes to take them out in much smaller groups

They finally realized that they were driven to a cliff. They have lost almost half of their number but most of the main family of the Bloodsails survived the clash.

Honestly after rereading Old Jon not being able to do the fire shout, something that he is probably the best user of we see (at least from when i stop reading at 700) and him being the dragonborn's father should be able to use the flame breath shout,

I learned some facts from this conversation with them. Unlike I thought before, the Thu'um is not that popular among the hidden clans. Only very few people can use it and they are considered the top fighters of the clan. Even Jonrad himself can't use the Thu'um even with his all Dragonknight thing that he is so crazy about.
