I swung my glaive left and then right for added effect, but the long-eared, brown-skinned, hobbit-like creature failed to express the proper emotion for my threat of death. There was no fear in its glittering red eyes. Only grimy, sharp-nailed fingers twitching in my direction.

In response, my inner wolf replied with, 'Haʊl!'

"You're drooling," my guide teased.

The fairy was half a head shorter than me, and I wasn't exactly tall for my age—something I will never admit out loud. She had an angular face, high cheekbones, a pointy chin and nose, and a pair of dimples around the edges of her puffy lips. Through her form-fitting apprentice leathers, I noticed that she had a runner's build—broad-shouldered with a slim waist, long legs, and well-toned arms.

I had to hand it to Divah. That Peter Pan reference would have been a hard code to crack for anyone who hadn't lived with her for the last five years. Seriously, my master devoured human pop culture like they were priceless treasures, which they were, but she was especially enamored by the classics; Dickens, Stoker, Barrie, Shelley, Tolkien, and the rest. That made them my bedtime stories too.

With a quick goodbye to one of my future teachers—because now that I'd met her, I was seriously considering picking Defense Against Black Magic as an elective—I dragged Liara out of the secret section before Mistress Grimsever could change her mind.

I figured something as powerful as the 'Sword of Damocles' would be the kind of pervert to whisper sweet nothings into a budding blade enchanter's ear. It was also the perfect grimoire to help Liara in her training too. If only the sword wasn't cursed with forcing its wielder into a state of perpetual paranoia for their impending doom after every swing of the blade.

[You leveled up!] appeared twice on my status bar after I'd successfully attuned to my new grimoire. This included a new title too.

"Lohgan insulted Brunhilde about her height and claimed she was too clumsy to be a real green cloak and Brunhilde took offense and started hurtling wind magic at him," Dess explained in rapid-fire speed.

Something about that last phrase grated on my mind as I followed after Dess and the others. It was only later, once we arrived outside the front doors of Skelmir Longhouse when I realized where I'd heard 'Memento Mori' before. It was the last phrase to reach my ears right before the head cultist drove her sacrificial knife into my heart and killed me for the first time.

Yes, I may not have been in its blast zone, but the effects of that magic circle managed to break the blessing a goddess bestowed on me. Meaning it was seriously strong stuff.

My chest heaved, my hands twitched, and it was hard to breathe like I'd over-caffeinated. However, despite the similarities with the 'Confusion' debuff's effects, the buff coursing through me now was a rush that never got old. It was the feeling that I alone existed in the realmsverse and everything else was lost to the tightening grip of time's embrace.

"He's not my man," Liara insisted, while I chimed in with, "I'm not her man yet…"

"Eat sage, you undead kamphundr!" I growled.

Frankly, I was starting to feel like I was the only one working hard on fulfilling her dad's oath to the Norns. Perhaps this was a sign that I shouldn't make things too easy for the she-elf. Maybe she should be chasing after me too.
