I know a lot of people are saying to go with a Roman-esque system for the military, but given the communication technology they seem to have, why not go with a modern military system? The Roman system was built in a world where traveling from one end of the empire to another could take years, so legions had to be highly independent, since commands from the capital would only reach them well after the war was won or lost. In the world you’ve written, information can flow much faster, so armies can be commanded far more centrally, reducing the risk of revolt and coup de ta. Additionally, if travel from one side of the empire to another is relatively quick, you don’t even need to station forces in the place they’re recruited, or even in one place the whole time; a system like the US where armed forces are sent to bases across the country for training, and then sent elsewhere for combat, could help minimize the loyalty soldiers feel for individual commanders, and lower chances of revolt, since your family is somewhere else in the empire. Additionally, this system allows soldiers to be thrust into an environment that makes them vulnerable to brainwash-ahem- training, so fanati-ahem patriotism can be fostered more easily. Side note- the idea of national identity is a very modern idea, appearing around WW1- does it exist in your world? Our MC could intentionally foster it if not! If it is, why? Second side note- people rarely revolt when they’re happy with the status quo, ie, they have enough food, they have upward mobility, economy is doing well. Almost all revolts in history happened when people were hungry, felt trapped, or had some other major complaint. Why are people of the empire revolting so easily? Are there some systemic inequalities in the empire? Are the local nobles not treating the people right? Is there a drought?
