This wandering in the dark was way too fast for me and I think you could use this part of the story to show how he is changing. Also there was very little interaction with his spirit. I don't know what role you have planed for the spirit but if it's important for character growth I think you should make some chapter where he is teaching the main character about the world or who he is now to deepen their relationship (friends, parent-child). Also I like the story so keep up the good work!
