I'm guessing it has to do with the lanshan being somewhat sacred. It's disrespectful to Confuscius and all scholars, living and dead. And shows how little the family thinks of them, society, hierarchy, etc. Especially because they mention that it is a ceremonial garment as well. So it's both not taking this honor seriously by wearing the lanshan as an everyday casual garment and also thinking that they deserve the honor of wearing something like this.
