I don't agree with the way the author handled it but it really is only small details, especially for an AU fanfic where things are supposed to be different. Voldemort lied about his blood status, what's there stopping him from lying about his name as Tom so that the anagram of 'I Am Lord Voldemort' still works? You said the fic obviously can't be good because of an eye color and slightly different name which is just plain stupid. I'm not calling this fic good, I haven't even read it, but honestly these are knit-picked details that really don't matter in the end.
