I probably shouldn't have brought that back up, because it will have only reminded Vanessa of those images in Angelique's shadow. But I don't plan on her getting any new images to ponder, which is why she is definitely being shielded from Angelique's shadow from now on.

God, I hope I didn't kill him. He doesn't answer, so I slowly open the stall door. I'm not sure what I expect to find—maybe remnants of him all over the bathroom. Instead, Ivan is standing there—pale—staring up into the air at the shadow surrounding him. It is his own, and apparently he can see it.

"Pull over," I say, now clearly understanding Ivan's motive for having me alone. He wants to get between Dominik and I.

"And don't get me wrong, Dom has had just about every woman," he chuckles, and my heart slowly sinks all the way down to my stomach where it feels like a heavy boulder starts to form. This is not the kind of information I want, but I can't bring myself to tell Ivan to stop either.

"It was Dominik, wasn't it?" He asks, no change in his emotion or expression. He's still smirking. "Dom is the one who interfered with the trafficking, right? If you two are… interested in each other…" his hand gestures toward the SUV we are following. "You wouldn't tell me. And it would make him more acceptable to you, I imagine. As a partner."

"If being with me is too much, just let me know," he says before looking back out the windshield. "I'll call Dom and have him pull over so he can take you."

"Nothing," he says quickly, brows feathered into a V. "I just did not expect him to act that way. He was pleased you were here. He seemed genuinely happy and relieved to have you, but apparently something about you rubbed him the wrong way."

Then he gets up and smooths his suit. Before leaving, he gives Luka a box in gold wrapping with a blood red ribbon tied at the top. It has my name on it.
