She inhaled sharply, her spine straightening, her head coming up. "Oh, lordie!" she said loudly."Never thought I'd see the day a gay, black man would walk into this bar!"

The squelching noises his boots made on the sticky floor took him back to the coke and candy-coated floors in the dollar movie theater he snuck into as a kid. The tables and chairs looked like they were all on their last spindly legs. The bar looked like something out of Dali's painting, the pale wood warped, the far end dramatically sloping, the stool legs gangly and unsteady looking. Even worse, it was a hick bar—filled with good ol' boys—making him the only black person there.

Smoke quickly obscure his site as it filled the room. Arden dropped to the floor and crawled around her desk.

As he came upon an hors d'oeuvres table, he grabbed a large metal platter and--because he was coughing--struggled to stuff it beneath his jacket as added protection. He wedged it up to his shoulders and started moving again. Soon he was right on top of the fire. Sparks and pieces of burning objects pelted him. Flaming material littered the floor and the further he went, the harder it became to avoid burning his hands and legs. Just small stings to be sure, but they were also quickly adding up to one big bite into his flesh.

Cryo grabbed his mother by her bony elbow and escorted her across the main floor, directing others to follow them as they went. By the time he made it out into the hall and to the side door, he had a group of a couple dozen in tow. He shoved open the door and cool, the fresh air hit his face.

She slammed a fist against the wall. The pain that reverberated up her arm broke the spell of his gaze. She turned right and ran down the hall, her cat hissing and spitting at her in rage.

Forcing her feet forward, she entered the living room and gaped at what she saw. Harley lay face down on the floor, his shoulder shredded, blood pooling around him. Kissa—in lioness form—lay on her side, a long, serrated knife protruding from her chest. And the lion man…dead? Maybe. But she didn't trust it. She ran for the outer door and jerked it open. To the left, the hall was filled with lions. Dozens of them all fighting against two others who seemed to have no trouble killing one after another, after another.

Turning to meet Harley's eyes took a lot of courage but she did it. His face reflected the fear she felt but none of the madness. He raked his fingers through his blond, baby fine hair. "Listen, I don't know what he did to you or even if you can understand me but as soon as I hear that sicko come into the apartment, I'm going out to help Kissa fight him."

Found. She unlocked her phone and dialed nine-one-one. A low rumble shook her body. She slowly turned as if in a waking nightmare. No. Bethany shook her head in denial. The lion—no way, there couldn't be a lion in her apartment—twisted like a contortionist and raised his big, triangular head to growl at her. His long canines dripped blood.

She let him run the show, not even trying to take the initiative. Their last date, on Friday, had ended in disaster when, after eating her out, he'd asked her to go down on him. She'd struggled from beginning to end. It wasn't his length or width that had made the task difficult. He wasn't that long or thick, but he'd grabbed the back of her head while he thrust into her mouth, rough and fast with no consideration for her need to breathe. After he'd come on her face and hair, he'd patted her sticky cheek and said, "Don't worry, Babe. We'll work on your technique."

He belonged to a large Catholic family. Had eleven brothers and sisters, and dozens of nieces and nephews. In fact, Bethany had met Nick through his sisters, Rachel, Rebecca, and Mary who attended the Green & Growing Gardeners Group that she went to once a month.
