He didn't have 20 points left, though. He had 10. After the first simulation, he got 90 points; first draw 10, second draw 20, third draw 30 means he used up 60 of his 90 points, leaving him with 30. He used 10 to activate the second simulation (because if you remember, his system gave him 10 'starting points,' which were all used just to start the simulation) which left him 20 points, and 10 to boost his talent. That leaves him with 10 points to extend the time—5 additional years, not 10.

He is also in a very hilly area (I believe, from novel's context, not real-life knowledge of the area) and so when ascending hills for long distance travel he should use a rest-step method to conserve energy. Basically, step uphill with one foot, lock your knee on your backfoot, and rest all your weight on that back leg (keeping your back in-line with that leg) momentarily before shifting the foot forward further up hill (you 'rest' or pause for ~0.5-1 second between each leg—and ensure proper posture—which places less strain on the body for long distance travel in hills and mountains).

High-lifting your feet is what kills while traveling long distances in snow, so it makes sense. If you can push forward low rather than doing high-knees, then that sounds like a win. My concern in dense-foiliage areas, though, would be dragging your feet and catching them on roots or low-to-the-ground plants.
