Capítulo 16: A war to end all wars starts
John was elected into office as David had predicted, but what scared him was a document handed down from the Whitehouse that was generated by a little known agency, it theorized that if a small incident was blown out of proportion by any one of our allies, it could lead to an all-out war with almost all countries involved. The document encouraged Americans to do as little to provoke others as possible without backing down. After reading the document John got worried, it was mid-July, did they have enough time?
David knew well enough the report would do nothing and WW1 would happen on cue, but the report added to the agency's validity. He was unsure about sending his men to war, he knew the chances of them dying was low, he was worried about them changing the timeline to much.
They had finished a high tech (for the times) base for the agency, it had no public presence and yet it seemed to have a lot of funding. Any agency could call on them for aid if they knew how. The how was well enough hidden that people normally gave up looking as they were not even sure what they did. It would be no issue to use the agency to prevent them from going to war. This was probably the best action.
On the reverse side, he would get a list of all the wounded that returned and those who returned with honors. He always respected those who were willing to offer their lives for their country, this time he could pay some of them back.
On the 28th of July 1914, the world went crazy and went to war. David had never understood war, he understood it on an intellectual level, but it confused him how throwing so many lives at a problem was supposed to solve it. He prepared regeneration serums, lesser medium, and higher physical boosts. And on the odd chance, he met anyone who came back worth it, intellectual serums. His ability to detect mutants before his sleep was a few meters, now it was about a kilometer. Living on an island had its benefits.
David called John a few weeks after war was declared.
"Hello Mr. Mayor, I hope you are well."
"No-one is well in these times Mr. Bater, I was hoping someone who could anticipate this might take action to stop it." Johns's quip was harmless enough, so David ignored it.
"I am calling you for two reasons. The first are those who fought and return wounded, or unable to find a stable life, I have the means to help them. You can choose not to refer them to me, but it would aid them if you did."
"Wait, you can do things like that? Help the wounded, why are you not offering this to the …"
David cut John off sharply "Mr. Mayor I am doing what I am able to now, do not rashly judge. The second thing to be aware of is you will have many men returning from Europe, they might well be carrying something we are not used to or prepared for here. Goody bye Mayor."
David put the phone down allot earlier than he intended, John had annoyed him.
He really was not sure if he was supposed to stick to the timeline or just do what the hell he wanted to.
This was his greatest frustration; he was worried that if he did, he would miss out on some of his greatest allies.
Being created due to strife and being created because someone needed you to be stronger seemed like it would produce different results.
He was aware he had god-like powers and he was doing his best not to abuse them and become the target of heroes, not that he believed they stood a chance.
He could see himself crushing Nick Fury's head for being an arrogant prick, the same for Xavier, these would probably not help in the long run though. Xavier was still on the table though, he truly felt that man was the bane of all the Evolved.
Sighing lightly David wondered why he was still having these debates with himself; he had decided that as much as possible the timeline needed to stay the same, yet he still found himself doubting at times.
