Capítulo 20: Just A Normal Day, Nothing Totally Happens

"It's been two years since the phenomenon that rocked the world when reports of Omnics worldwide were gaining sentience.

Scientists remain baffled at this occurrence as questions are still on all of minds.

Founder of the Omnica Corporation the former main manufacturer of omnics until it was shut down a year ago, due to corruption only dismissing it as a simple malfunction issue.

Since then groups have formed claiming that Omnics are no different from people and demand for Omnic rights.

We have Susan at an Omnics activist's rally right now, Susan."

The TV clicks as it powers down.

I was tired of watching that nonsense and I had more important things to worry about this morning.

Why did Omnics have to grow a brain? Now my boss was one of these idiotic activists and felt that Omnics deserved better positions within the company.

Of course that fell on me to find them suitable positions, being told to let actual people go to make way for these walking circuits.

I sighed as I made breakfast thinking about the Omnic we have that cleans the house.

Omnic rights? Hah.

Putting the eggs neatly on the plate I call out to my husband.

"George, breakfast!"

I start on pouring the cup of coffee the way he likes it and notice I haven't heard him coming down the stairs yet.

I hope he didn't oversleep again, I can't afford to be late today dealing with his mess.

"George, food!" I yell unsuccessfully again.

Placing everything I'm carrying down, I start to climb up the stairs.

Walking past the upstairs bathroom, I look in to see that it's cold, meaning that he hasn't even showered yet.

"You have to leave in 30 minutes. Get up!" I shout while cutting the shower water on to save some time.

Nearing the bedroom, I find it strange that I don't hear his usual loud snoring but write it off as him finally waking up.

Opening the door I say, "If you're going to be like this you're going to go to bed earlier."

As the words leave my mouth, my eyes fall on a scene that makes my heart skip a beat.

George is laying there, his eyes lifeless looking at me with his head turned far around to his back, with the Omnic just staring at him.

Unable to control myself, I let out a scream as tears streamed down my face.

The Omnics head snaps towards me and reaches out a hand, slowly walking towards me.

I realize as I look into its red glowing eyes that it killed George and I was next.

Turning around I begin to run, trying to think what to do.

'Do I have enough time to run out the front door?

Where's my phone?

How long till the police arrive if I call them?'

With little options, I turn to run down the stairs.

I feel a strong pressure on my back and before I know it, I'm flying down the stairs.

Spinning as I fall, I have just enough time to see those red glowing eyes with an outstretched hand as my side hits the last couple of steps sending waves of pain throughout my body as a loud crunch echoes through the house.

Tumbling down the last of the stairs, I land on my stomach as my breath is knocked out of my body.

Gasping for air, I begin to crawl towards the front door, desperate to escape.

Finally catching my breath, I hear a soft thud then another as my mind processes that the Omnic is coming down the stairs.

Terrified I begin to rise to my feet, trying to ignore the pain my side is in as the thudding quickens.

Finally making it to my feet, I take off running to the door, with the thudding directly behind me.

Making it to the door, I manage to get the lock and open the door, before a metal hand flies past my head, closing it back.

A hand grasps my shoulder and I can feel myself getting lifted off my feet as I fly back.

My shoulder hits the wall first with a crack, as more pain assaults me.

My head starts swimming as cold hands grab me around my neck and start lifting.

Slowly rising in the air, I try desperately to pry the Omnics hands from around my neck as its grip tightens.

Using my last breaths of air I manage to let out a weak, "Please don't kill me."

My words go ignored as I can no longer breathe.

I start to kick at the Omnic but it ignores my hits.

As my vision darkens, the last thing I see is the red glowing eyes that stay imprinted even in the darkness.

------------------------------------------------

I looked out the window, bored out of my mind.

As an officer of the law, that wasn't a good sign especially in the state of California.

That usually meant that something was happening.

I looked at my partner, an elderly guy named Jim, who was driving with a carefree attitude.

Must be nice being only a couple of months from retirement.

Me, I was stuck with the new guy title until someone else came along and took it from me.

While I was in my thoughts, a call over the radio brought me out of them.

"We got reports of a 10-40 on Baxter Rd. Suspects unknown." Dispatch says.

Jim turns to me and asks, "What's a 10-40 rookie?"

I sigh and continue to look out the window as I respond, "A fight in progress."

"Alright go ahead and respond to it." He says,

Picking up the radio I say into it, "E312 10-17."

As soon as I make the call, he performs a U-turn, speeding down the road with lights and sirens.

We arrive within 20 minutes to a block with three houses and a pawn shop.

Getting out of the car, I immediately think that it's too quiet for a fight in progress.

Carefully walking up to the pawn shop, I place my hand on the door knob.

The sound of glass shattering snaps my head to the right as a guy comes flying through the shops front window.

Running to him, he's covered in blood and his arm is twisted the wrong way.

His eyes snap open, filled with fear as he starts grabbing on my shoulder.

"What's wrong? What's happening?" I try to get information from him.

"He was cool, we were just talking, then he just went wild. Brandon left to go call you guys while I held him off." The guy says in a hurry.

Pulling my gun, I'm stopped by Jim who stops my hand.

"Defense matrix son." He says.

"He just threw a guy out the window and his arm is backwards." I protest

"Based on what he's told us so far, we can only assume they were in a fist fight. Put it away until it's needed, rookie."

Trying to contain my anger, I put away my gun and pull out my baton as we enter the premise.

The store is dark as somehow the fluorescent lights were destroyed so we pulled out our flashlights.

The store is in a mess as there are pulled over shelves, broken musical instruments, and papers all over the floor.

We make our way to the counter where we can make out the outline of a figure.

"Riverside County Police, let me see your hands!"

The figure doesn't move and when we shine our light on it, the light reflects like it's metal.

Jim calls out, "I think that's an Omnic rookie."

I let out my breath that I was holding out of nervousness.

"Omnic, is there anyone else in the building?"

The Omnic turns and I stop in my tracks.

Something was wrong with this Omnic.

Its eyes glowed red, which unnerved me.

It took a step forward and even Jim showed cautiousness.

"Stay where you are Omnic, let the police do their job." Jim warns.

It ignores us and continues to walk towards us.

As it draws closer I begin to grow more anxiously and I pull my gun.

"Stop right there or I will open fire!" I shout.

It's hand reaches out, almost making it to me and I open fire.

Shots tear through the body of the Omnic and on the fifth shot, the light in its eyes fades as it crumples to the floor.

Breathing heavy I turn to Jim who is just as stunned as I am.

Looking at me he says, "There's no case law on Omnics so you're good.

I never did trust these things."

We clear the rest of the building and find no one else so we head back outside to find the man still on the ground.

"We took care of the malfunctioning Omnic." I explained to the guy.

Relief flashes over his face for a brief moment before fear once again returns.

"What about the other ones?" He asks.

Jim steps forward, "What other ones?"

"We were selling at least eight more." The guy explains.

No sooner than he says that a bloodcurdling scream cuts through the air as each of us turn towards the houses.

Jim draws his gun as well, while the guy slowly rises to his feet.

Through the darkness of the alley, five pairs of red eyes appear looking at us.

Jim holds his radio up to his mouth.

"This is E312 requesting backup at Baxter Road."

His only response is static.

"Dispatch 10-9."

He once again gets static.

A figure steps through the darkness revealing the red eyes belong to an Omnic as it drags something behind it.

As they all reveal themselves, we see the first one is dragging the body of a man whose head is turned the wrong way.

From beside us, we hear the guy scream out, "Brandon. Those fuckers killed Brandon. Shoot them."

Without hesitation, me and Jim open fire on the Omnics.

The one holding Brandon's body holds it up, using it as a shield as they pick up the pace, walking to us in strides.

We only manage to down two before we run out of bullets and see there's not much time until they make it to us.

Deciding to get out of here, I slide over the hood of the car and climb into the driver's seat.

The guy jumps into the passenger seat but Jim remains where he is, trying to reload.

"Jim let's go!" I shout.

He ignores me and continues to open fire on the one holding Brandon.

As it gets near, it tosses Brandon's body at Jim, and they fall to the ground.

The Omnic picks Jim up as he fights against the Omnic to no avail until the Omnic uses its other hand and snaps Jim's neck.

Tossing Jim's limp body to the side, it turns its red eyes towards us.

I waste no time, in cranking on the hover car and begin backing up.

To my surprise, I hit two objects as I do, but ignore it as I only think to escape and regroup with other officers to handle this problem.

As I drive down the road, the guy is shaking in his seat, crying.

Suddenly a hand comes through the passenger window and grabs the guy, pulling him through.

As I reach out to grab the guy, another hand reaches through my window and grabs the wheel.

It pulls to the left and the car veers off the road, crashing into a tree.

Dazed from the crash, I feel a strong grip on my arm as I feel myself flying.

I crash hard into a tree as pain runs through my left arm.

Managing to stand up, I see an Omnic walking slowly towards me.

Pulling my gun, I aim it at the Omnic and start to fire.

The gun clicks three times before I remember that I never reloaded.

Throwing the gun at the Omnic, I pull my baton.

With three steps it reaches me and I swing at it.

It catches my arm and its other hand slams into my face.

I fall to the ground as I see stars from its hit.

I recover just in time to see a black object heading towards me.

The baton I just had connects with my face as unbearable pain causes me to scream out.

The Omnic doesn't let up as it continues to pelt me with blows.

As I begin to fade, the last thing I see is it's red eyes then the baton comes down once again and there's only darkness.
