Capítulo 40: Snakes In The Grass Are Harder To See

We slowly started to emerge from our meeting spot.

The air was just as sombre as it was when we started the meeting. Many of the division captains were still shaken from the events that had previously transpired. Some of the captains looked at Stussy with surprise, they had never expected that she'd be the one to aid Whitebeard in catching Chameleone.

Some division captains murmured to each other over the topic of treachery. It seems many were certain after this brutal display of power, nobody would dare to cross Whitebeard. I could only sigh tiredly at my family members' naivety.

Their assumptions that there wasn't another traitor within our crew was simply unfounded as I had already spotted another one almost as soon as I stepped out. He would later be famous in the anime for having the power to absorb two devil fruits. The man was non other than Marshall D. Teach, or Blackbeard.

When I had first spotted him, killing intent slowly started to radiate from my body. It was through this man's plotting that led to Whitebeard's death. It would've been simple to nip this future problem in the bud, and kill him while he was still 12 years old.

However, as I slowly began to reach for my axe, Stussy stopped me by holding my hand and looking at me. Our gazes met for quite some time before I sighed and gave up on the idea. Whether I liked it or not, Marshall was still Whitebeard's child at the moment.

He would not take this situation lightly, especially after what had just happened with Chameleone. So I couldn't kill the little squirt, Marco; who was walking beside us, asked us why I was glaring at Teach like that.

I could only reply,"I don't like his face" before heading to my ship. I could sense Teach looking at me fearfully, since I was always out patrolling. He had never really seen me before, hell, a lot of these new pirates don't even know who I am. Only Whitebeard along with the Division Commanders knew my identity.

Though they can trust me, they wouldn't just ignore the fact that I had killed one of our own. It gets worse when it's a helpless child like Teach at the moment. I could only stand in the sidelines and watch as he slowly plots to betray Whitebeard.

Whitebeard had ordered all division commanders to board the Moby Dick from there on out. The ships that the division commanders were using would be used to patrol Whitebeard's territory. The only difference was that this time Whitebeard had placed me back in charge of patrolling again.

I was going to ask him why when he just patted my head and gave me a warm smile. I could only sigh and obey his command. It seemed that his trust in me had remained unwaivering throughout this entire time.

I decided that I would follow Whitebeard for a bit before I would return to Ulvehoved to pick up my trusty crew. I borrowed some more of Marco's men to sail the ship as we ventured on within the New World.

A week later, the bird that normally carried the latest news dropped a newspaper right on my lap as I was resting on my ship. I tossed a gold coin right at the bird before it flew away. Stussy who was sitting right next to me reading a book, closed it as she opened the newspaper.

She read it for quite sometime before her eyes opened slightly. She then handed the newspaper to me before pointing at a particular story that had caught her attention.

It appears that Shiki and Roger had met in naval combat once more, It became a destructive battle that had caused extensive damage on both ends' ships. However, Shiki had the upper hand; just as he was about to continue to pressure the Roger Pirates when a destructive storm had set in. Apparently, the storm was so strong that both ships had to evacuate for safety; making Roger escape by pure luck.

Pirates like Roger and Luffy's luck had never ceased to amaze me. How do you get so lucky that Lady luck herself is always on your side? That kind of luck was to die for.

I tossed the newspaper away and continued to stare at the sea. The Moby Dick was just infront of our ship as we continued to sail peacefully. There was an occasional marine ship that would appear nearby, but they would at most watch us cautiously as we continued to sail.

Stussy, who had stopped reading after looking at the newspaper and was currently snuggled up on my shoulder, caught me off guard with a question.

"How did you know that Chameleone was the traitor?"

I could only freeze as a cold shudder ran up my spine. I knew Stussy was always kept an eye on me, but I didn't know she had her eyes on me when we were smoking out Chameleone! This was bad, what should I tell her? Should I lie? My mind was racing up to the point I was beginning to get a headache.

I took a deep breathe before staring at Stussy's Saphirre blue eyes. I didn't want to lie to her because I would feel an insufferable amount of guilt. However, its not that I could just tell her that I had watched this entire world's story on TV and just happened to wake up here.

It's too absurd, plus, this was going to be a secret I planned on taking to the grave. I could only brush the bangs off her forehead before replying,

"It was just a hunch, nothing more." We continued to stare at each other for quite some time before she relented. She looked quite angry with me as she went back to reading her book. I could only sigh quietly, I would have to make it up to her in the future; big time.

We continued sailing for a couple of more days, most of the time in Whitebeard's ship. They would spend their days just drinking and partying. Something that I had often found annoying sometimes, they were just too noisy.
