"When will the wedding take place?" I studied the King's face as I awaited his reply. We rode side by side now, and the guards rode a few paces behind us; enough space for us to have private conversations without the risk of being heard. "Three nights from now," he exhaled softly, and I could sense he was fatigued by the furrow of his brow and the raspiness of his words. I had always been perceptive of such things, but at a time like this, it really didn't matter to me how a Daemon was feeling. Could an all-powerful deity really be fatigued? It's not like he was drained of his mother power as I had been. Nevertheless, he did not speak to me unless I ignited conversation, so we rode in silence for a good hour. Eventually, we reached the heart of the kingdom. An ominous, black castle was far off in the distance—the Daemon castle. "Lords and civilians from all six kingdoms will be celebrating with us, so prepare yourself," he broke the silence. "Prepare myself for the unnatural unification of two different species? I will do my best," I smiled. He tilted his head and cocked his brow. "Is it too late for me to return you to your father, or would that be a great offense to His Majesty?" "He would not be surprised, Your Grace. The only surprise would be that a Daemon king concerned himself with whether or not others are offended by his actions," my eyes met his. "I did not express that I wouldn't go through with it, I simply asked if it would offend," he defended; it must be embarrassing for a Daemon to be seen in even a sliver of good light. "Well, in that case, I stand by your decision in taking me back. I am the kind of wife that would support her husband's decision, you see. Obedient—is that what they call it? I do ask one simple favor, if you don't mind," I carefully read his expression as the words of snark spilled from my mouth. I really had no control over my behavior, but before a Daemon king, it would be wiser to watch my tongue. "Go on," he said, seeming to play along. "Take my brother Braden instead. I may be crass, but I cannot suffer another minute in his shadow." "No offense to your brother, but I prefer a more feminine bride, so I believe that means you're stuck here." he voiced firmly. I frowned. "Unless you have a sister?" Drakvol raised his brow again, and the corners of his mouth tugged upward ever so slightly. I clicked my tongue—the sound audible even against the loud trotting of hooves on stone. "Then you will be calling this home for the years ahead," he nodded his head to the castle looming above us. ~~Princess Lorelei of the Fae Kingdom is arranged to marry the demon Prince Drakvol once he becomes king of Lucem. I dove to my feet, unsure of where or what was happening but the man here to help needed my help. My hands connected with a strange, scratchy fabric when I shoved it hard enough away and threw out a shield around me and the crying sad girl. I heard her, the fight, the panting of other assassins that were dying. I smelt blood, chains, and anger. My master's anger. "You fucking, pet! Andrew is going to kill you when he finds out!" The woman screeched, pounding her fists against the barrier while I strained against the barrier. Already feeling dreadfully weak again but I was determined to hold out. For the sad girl. "I can't hold it up for long," I admit, gritting my teeth as my hands trembled badly enough for the chains to rattle loudly. The woman continued her relentless attack, not letting up when I bite into my lip and drawled more blood. The taste of iron filling all my senses while the fight between our savior continued one until there was a sharp slice through the skin and flesh. "John!" My worry for the person was soon distinguished as the woman hitting my barrier pulled away and dove for something. Knowing that her attention was on something else, I dropped down to the ground in exhaustion and misery. I-I can't see anything... I can only see darkness... My vision... Wh- I felt a jacket wrap around my shoulders as more of my body fell limp knowing that I had no other choice other than to blindly trust the person that the sad girl loved. 〰〰〰 This is the third book of the Power series. A young girl, promised to a prince. A dangerous warrior with a dark secret. The collapse of a dynasty and an unlikely rise to power. The Fonterell family had held the seat of power in The Woodlands for over two hundred years, when the Great War united the regions of Saverio into a single powerful kingdom. When the war was over, five prominent families were granted control of the five regions, under the rule of a single monarch at its center in The Midlands. Since then, some of the regions had changed hands- some of the regions’ lords had lost power or fallen from grace- but the Fonterell family had remained seated in The Woodlands for generations. It seemed that their loyalty and service to the king of Saverio was finally being rewarded, as King Wester had offered a proposal of marriage between his son, Prince Terian, and the daughter of Lord Fonterell, Lady Fairen. The proposal was quickly accepted and arrangements were made for Lady Fairen to travel to The Midlands to reside in the castle and become accustomed to life at court, where she would wed Prince Terian in the coming months. Fairen was shocked that she had been chosen to be Prince Terian’s bride, but was determined to make her family proud by becoming the future queen of Saverio. She had no way of knowing what her future truly held- how she’d come to despise her fiancée, be used as a pawn in a grab for power, and fall in love with a dangerous stranger.

"I want the Crown Prince's soul." Whether it be the emperor's prized jade pendant or a chapter from the Book of Life and Death, as long as there was a good price, there was no doubt that Lingjun would return with the objective. She was a mercenary after all—morally ambiguous, endlessly sarcastic, and admittedly a tinge perverted. And for a shadow who has escaped death itself by stealing back her own soul from the Underworld, failure simply wasn't an option. She had a reputation to live up to. That was all until she met him. Thump. Thump. The footsteps blended into the rhythm of her pounding heart. Lingjun fled into the night...emptyhanded for the first time. _____ Cover Art: Manipulated via Photoshop but all credits to the original artist (https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/5200530).
