ตอน 1: Paradise from Above

Nevada Desert…

April 2, 2040…

It was a silent night, with no sign of any storm or turbulence. The people are quietly asleep, tucked under their blankets as they anticipate for the new and bright sun to rise, waiting for the moment when they could go back to their work and earn financial income.

The animals, however, were different. Many were in slumber along with their pet owners, some are out hunting for prey, and others are simply nocturnal, thus staying the night just because they can.

Amid this silence, however, a loud and unsettling whirring noise blared across the entire land of sand.

Time seemed to warp as it moved about- reverse and forward- before a flash of light illuminated the night sky, akin to a high afternoon only to fade back into the black.

A cylinder of unknown material appeared in the epicenter of the light, its color blending in with the background. Lines begin to form along the vertices of the cylinder as the interior revealed itself, albeit it was only ajar.

Inside, a feminine hand grasped the door as the mysterious individual opened it, stepping out from their pod.

They, or rather, she appeared with a slim white suit and silky stockings covering her plump legs. Removing the astronaut-like helmet, her pale-skinned face felt the cold breeze of the night as her stark-white hair flow out of the hood and lay slowly on her shoulders.

The lady looked around, trying to regain her bearings as she felt uneasiness creep into her spine, the avant-garde environment prompting her to question her current predicament.

Over on one side, a distant village could be seen. Over to the other, an urban area was spotted. Here and there, she's always left with two choices.

She chose none and went to the middle.

...

Along her way, there were three surprising things to be found: sand, sand, and more sand, with even more sand along the sandy way as she treads the uncountable grains of silica and oxygen combined.

...

For exactly 2 hours, she continues to walk, until she sees the bustling city of Las Vegas. But something was quite different.

The town appeared to have flying cars, strange trees covered in silicon-like bubbles, buildings aligned sideways, casinos filled with the rich, and concerts giving life to the already lively city.

She was.... perplexed to say the least. Her face was painted with confusion, a look of puzzlement as she kept her helmet somewhere in her pocket, seemingly shrinking in size.

Yes, she knew was in the infamous city and knows a lot about it. But that has nothing to do with her being here nor does it have any significance for her arrival at the place she never planned to be in.

Maybe it had something to do with the machine. Perhaps it malfunctioned or maybe she typed the wrong coordinates to what time she'll be in. Thoughts and hypotheticals ran rampant through her mind, placing her hand on her chin as she looked around, tilting her head here and there.

She looks at her feet, but the answer isn't there. She looks up, but the sky won't give her any hint. She tried blinking her eyes, testing if her visuals may have been bugged or quite possibly damaged. She tries pinching her cheeks, checking if she could be experiencing some high-level delirium-type of technology, but there was none. She attempts to shake her head, but she only looked stupid in the passing crowd of people making weird glances at her. The people start to chatter about multiple things regarding her model-like looks, her weird movements, and her outlandish clothes.

Could it be that she's in a simulation made by 'those people'? The same 'people' who did...

No, it was not.

It was not 'them' nor was it anything related to those people. She's in the real Las Vegas in 2040 and she's there standing in the middle of the highway, nothing more and nothing less.

She tried to breathe in and breathe out, but the paranoia remains. It felt like removing the seeds of some tree accursed with eternal growth, only for it to spread like a giant heap of wool on fire, wanting to get hold of anything it can to subdue it into the depths of overthinking. Run as she might, there's nowhere for her pitiful feet to move, stuck in the cycle that had caught up to her long before she thought of removing it.

Theories upon hypotheticals overflow as she closes her eyes tightly, desperate at knowing if this is reality or not. She tried to pump any essence that her brain could ever generate, any reason to believe she isn't where she is, finding anything to disapprove and annul the truth, akin to a falsely hired lawyer trying to argue for their defendant who committed a heinous crime.

Focus. She had to focus on what she wanted. Get rid of anything she deems unimportant, only consider the variables necessary. Maybe everything presented to her could've been a trick, could've been the work of an outside party she's unaware of, or maybe some memory that she's dreaming about.

That's probably the answer.

It could all just be a dream. Maybe all of this is something made by her absurd mind. All of this thinking didn't have to escalate to such lengths when the very solution is right under their noses, simply waiting to pop up like an advertisement in a video.

Of all the possible things she could speculate, something that got under her radar. How could something so easy to predict be that complex?

Had she only thought more, had she only made more assumptions, had she piled up th-

"Excuse me, ma'am? You seem to be uhhh, quite lost. Is there anything bothering you, miss? There's a nearby clinic that we can make you go through. You are disturbing a whole lot of people, I'm afraid."

A voice. A calm, polite, and masculine voice broke her out of her hallucinatory trance, the sound of the city suddenly booming back into her ears as the shock brought her back to reality. She didn't truly notice that people had started chit-chatting around her.

In her embarrassment, she slowly scratched her head as she slightly lowered her head in humility.

"Sorry for that... I, uh, didn't mean to cause a commotion... P-pardon me..."

She began to sneakily and steadily walk away as she remained looking down at the floor.

The man followed suit as he raised an eyebrow, somewhat curious about this mysterious individual.

"You seem to not be from here, madam... Could you perhaps be a foreigner here? I could, erm, provide a guide to help you from your addlement" he said, his hands on his back.

"I do have a question..."

"Oh word! Go ahead then..."

At first, she was confused, but now she's getting close. Now she only needs one simple question to confirm it all.

...

"What year is it?"
