I get this reasoning, but I think the more obvious conclusion (considering he just saw the 2nd year and 3rd year class points) would have been that Class D is the class with the lowest class points.

A defective product is not the same as trash. A defective product means that there is a glaring flaw, not that it is completely trash. Class D represents people who specialize in one field. Examples: Horikita is great at academics/sports and terrible at socializing, Kushia is great at socializing but has a terrible personality. Even someone like Haruki (a complete idiot) has a specialized trait, he is extremely shameless (which can be useful). I believe the author/school intended to have each class represent certain types of people. Class A represents hexagonal warriors (good at everything, but not the best). Class B represents unity (like the power of friendship). Class C represents those who solve things with their fists (the tyrants/fighters). Class D represents the eccentric specialists (super amazing in one field but have very glaring flaws).
Class D, on the other hand, is a place rated as trash... Full of defective products and hopeless waste of semen.
