Recipe for failure: Viserys is weak. He let the dragons leave the Targaryen lineage and even married his daughter, his supposed heir to the throne, to a Velaryon. He gave dragons, power, and influence. Colys felt equal to the Targaryens and thought the Seven Kingdoms could very well bear the Velaryon name. If anyone had conquered everything he conquered, they would think the same thing. I don't blame him; I blame Viserys. If he had married his eldest daughter to his eldest son, the couple would have ruled together. If he had limited the powers of the Velaryon family after Colys's death and ordered Daemon's marriage to Colys's eldest daughter, the rebellion would never have happened, and the Targaryen dragons would never have become extinct. My assessment is that Viserys is a weak, soft, and malleable king. King Viserys was never a dragon; he was a lizard that shed its tail at any sign of danger.
