Chương 50: C47 Water Pump

Dad seems to be calling the army together again. I'm going to have to find a way to increase the treasury, or else we'll have to raise the tax on citizens. I would rather save the citizens money, and find a way to increase our funds myself. I've been working on something that I think would make me a lot of money. I've been drawing up a blueprint for a manual water pump. In order to get water, people have three options. Collecting rain, rivers/lakes/ponds/springs if you live near any of those and lastly wells. To get water from wells it's your usual bucket on a rope that's lowered down manually, but a well like that can only be so deep. With this pump, we would be able to look far lower in the ground for water.
Every country would pay out of the ass for the blueprint to make manually water pumps. Especially desert country's, as the ability to get water from far lower in the ground would be extremely appealing to dry areas. It would also protect your wells from poisoning in war, and contamination from sicknesses, as the well would be sealed with the spigot and lever on top. I have sent a message to Dalir saying that I needed to speak to him, and ten minutes later there's a knock on my study door.
*knock knock*
"Come in!" I call from my seat behind the desk. I sent the clones away before calling for him. I need to find a way to explain the clones, but I doubt I'll find one, so for now, they will remain a secret.
"You called for me, Your Highness?" Dalir says as he enters the office.
"Yes, I have an exciting project for you." I pull out the blueprint and lay it on my desk facing him. "Come and look at this." He moves to my desk and eyes the blueprint inquisitively.
"What is this?" He asks.
"This is an upgrade and replacement for water wells." I say and he eyes it even further. "I call it the manual water pump."
"Huh, how does it work?" He asks.
"Well, it would be a sealed off well, so no more open-air wells. When pumping the lever, the water would come out of the spout." I explain.
"Interesting, and you want me to make one?" He asks.
"Yeah, I need to know that this would work. Of course, you can edit the blueprint if you feel improvements are needed." I say and he takes the blueprint instantly.
"I'll get on it immediately." He makes for the door. "I knew working for you would be interesting, kid!" He exclaimed from the hallway.
"Haha, I'm glad I hired him"
Later that day, I had a meeting with the earth mages that have been working on the concrete spell. We meet outside the manor, and they each perform a spell. The ground in front of each of them morphs into concrete. It looks and feels exactly as I remember, but the strength needs to be tested. I have some guards come up with pickaxes, and start smashing each mages concrete. Let's just say we aren't there yet. Every slab of concrete was destroyed on the first or second hit, so I sent them back to the drawing board. This is taking longer than I thought it would, but the reward will be worth it. As I entered my study, Souei appeared from my shadow.
"Master, the herd is growing faster than expected. The battles are getting worse with each passing day, and soon my clones will have to get involved to protect your mother." He says.
"Hmm." I take a seat on the couch as my clones are working at the desk. "Do you think the herd has grown fat enough yet? We could go and kill the leader and some of the high ranked core beasts now." I asked.
"Fat enough to boost the army as you planned? No, but the army isn't even ready to set out yet." He informs.
"This is troubling." I think for a moment. Souei has to get involved somehow without ruining my plans. Looking through Souei's status I found a solution. "Souei, could you use fear manipulation to weaken the herd? At least until it's fat enough for our kingdom to eat our fill." I ask.
"Yes, I could make it so they are afraid and hesitant to attack. That should weaken them considerably." He informs.
"Don't weaken them too much. Just enough to keep the adventurers safe, and the herd still growing." I explain.
"I understand, Master." He says and returns to my shadow.
POV Queen Astrid
The herd was getting stronger and stronger for a while, and we all thought it would be impossible to hold out for the army's arrival. The meetings were all centered around when we should start retreating, but now the herd has suddenly started acting strangely. They seem hesitant to attack as if the beasts are afraid of something. We're still combating them, but they seem to flinch at our mere presence. Something has them spooked, and hopefully, that something is on our side.
We were worried that we wouldn't be able to control the path of the herd anymore, but now with this new occurrence, it's easy to corral them away from any human settlements. When they start heading towards any settlements, we engage them for a bit and they run in the opposite direction of us. If things stay like this then we'll easily be able to hold out until the army gets here.
POV Syrin
A week later and the concrete still hasn't passed the smash test. Dalir is still working on the manual water pump. Apparently, my blueprint was shit. Those were his words exactly, but I'm not offended. I'm not an expert in these things, so there's no reason to take offense. Although, he did say that the blueprint was good enough for him to get started on a workable one.
The army has finally come together and is ready to set out. Dad requested Novas help in teleporting the army there, so Nova spent a while just teleporting small groups of soldiers at a time to the area the herd is in. The herd has been growing into the perfect meal for the army, and now that they're ready its time to get to work. When I looked through Souei's status, I saw that a he has an ability that could help considerably, so I tweaked my plans slightly.
I'm going to allow the herd to continue growing past what the kingdom can handle. The reason behind this is one of Souei's abilities. Poison Manipulation! As the army is getting situated, Souei clones are poisoning the beasts' food and water sources. Mild paralysis poison to weaken them without totally laying them out. This way the army can deal with a higher number of beasts, and with that, they would gain much more XP! I've also ordered him to make sure the water sources don't lead to our own forces, as poisoning my own men and woman would be truly stupid. He'll also be removing the poison from the waters after all of this. Hopefully, everything goes as planned.
