CHAPTER 44

For the next week, Elmi did detailed research about the Ephemeral Emotion or Vivid Dreams Potions; they were really hard to make. After getting the necessary ingredients from Seraphina, Elmi was ready to work. As he was walking toward the Room of Requirement, he came across Harry.

"Hey, Elmi."

"Hey Harry, how are you?"

"I am good." Harry's voice was a little bitter.

"What is wrong?"

"I... I found a mirror on the fourth floor, and I thought... I thought it showed the future, but it was not."

At that moment, Elmi knew what Harry was talking about: The Mirror of Erised. Harry said,

"When I showed it to Ron, he saw himself as the head boy and the quidditch team captain." he looked more bitter, and his voice was a bit wavering. He continued,

"It turns out it shows what you desire." He smiled bittersweetly and continued, "At least I can see them in the mirror."

Elmi blurted out,

"Damn it."

Elmi thought Dumbledore was still away, and Harry was not supposed to find it until the second semester. Elmi held Harry by his shoulders firmly and said with a dead-serious tone,

"Harry, that thing is called The Mirror of Erised, and it is not a magical mirror; it is a cursed object. Many people waste away in front of it, or they get obsessed with it."

He looked right into Harry's eyes and said,

"Harry, you cannot go to that mirror again. Can you promise me?"

He looked a bit shocked by how Elmi acted, and he nodded his head. Elmi sighed and said,

"What is wrong with this school? Everything in or around it is trying to maim or kill us. Do the professors know nothing about school safety?"

Harry changed the subject and said,

"What are we going to do about Quirrell? You told us he was the one trying to enter the underground chamber. Wouldn't he try to enter it again since Dumbledore is not at school?"

Elmi shook his head,

"Dumbledore wouldn't have left it in school; he must have taken it with him. As for Quirrell, I think we need to wait for Dumbledore to come back. I have a bad feeling about him. For now, you guys just keep your distance like always."

...

After leaving Harry behind, Elmi reached the Room of Requirements, and he was going to attempt to make an expert-level potion. He was going to try making a Vivid Dream potion. After researching both potions, he decided it was easier to make this one.

Inside the Room of Requirement, the atmosphere shifted to accommodate Elmi's brewing needs. The cauldron bubbled with a blend of Silvered Moon Orchid Petals, powdered Ashwinder Scale, a tincture of Starlight Dew, and a whisper of neutralized acromantula poison. The concoction promised to induce vivid and beautiful dreams without any nightmares, but the complexity of the ingredients demanded unwavering focus.

As the potion neared completion, it was time to add the Valerian root, but the aura of magic inside the cauldron didn't look harmonized enough, so Elmi hesitated, but this was a mistake. A second of hesitation had lowered the quality of the potion. Some of the magical essences inside it had burst out with the bubbling. Elmi had added the root, but he was late. When he added it, he realized why the root was used. It acted as a catalyst for the harmonization.

He was not going to dump the potion; it was his first time doing it, and he didn't expect to do it right the first time, either. He thought of the first batch as the training round. He continued to stir the potion. He added some lavender for its soothing properties. For an expert-level potion, heat control was one of the most important things. With one hand, he was controlling the heat, and with the other, he was trying to stir the cauldron at a constant speed.

Everything looked perfect other than the lowered magical essence inside the potion. While making the Draught of peace, he had made a mistake while stirring, so he was self-conscious about it. Because of this, his focus on the flames broke only for a second, and at that moment, he realized he fucked up.

The magical essence inside the cauldron had turned from a calm sea to a maelstrom, and he was trying to take control of it, but it was apparent he was fighting a losing battle.

A few seconds later, Elmi's eyes grew with shock, he realized what was going to happen. The cauldron succumbed to the magical tempest, exploding with a burst of arcane energy. Shimmering fragments of the cauldron propelled by the force of the blast. Elmi stood at the epicenter and raised his hand to cast, his eyes reflecting a blend of determination and surprise,

"Protegos Repellus! "

An eerie blue and gray shield appeared around him just in time. The protective shield held firm, intercepting the fragmented remnants before they could inflict harm. Each piece rebounded against the magical barrier, creating a dazzling display of lights. The room echoed with the aftermath of the explosion, its magical aura undiminished, but now the residue of the potion spread like a mist.

It would make it hard to breathe, but thanks to the shield, he was at least protected against the particles in the air for the duration of the shield. The shield was able to push away those particles because they were infused with magic.

...

After cleaning up the room, Elmi sifted through the damage. His ingredients were safe, but both of his cauldrons were damaged. One of them was already obliterated by the blast, and the other one had big holes in it caused by the magical explosion and the fragments from the other cauldron. He pulled his wand,

"Reparo!"

A magical wind encased the cauldron, and it started to rotate swiftly when it was done. The holes were smaller, but they were not entirely gone; the magical fragments must have incinerated the metal, and Repero could only fix broken things and couldn't fix something when there were missing parts. He sighed in resignation; a moment of mistake could have enormous consequences.

He didn't have any other cauldron of this size; he had two more, but they were too big for this amount of potion. The size of the cauldron was important for a potion, too; he couldn't use those big cauldrons for a small amount of potion he was brewing.

He didn't know what to do. He had two choices: he could write to his mother and ask her to send him a new one, but then she would demand an explanation of what happened to his perfectly fine cauldrons, or he could buy one with the help of Seraphina, but then he had to wait for a week until her weekend pass.
