We have no idea what sort of aspect Cronos developed, or if he did in the true past, not just the nightmare. Why would it be ice? We do know that somehow someone from Verge froze the great river to build Verge long before Cronos was born. And sunny still has to go back to the pyramid in the future. We are probably going to learn more about Verge then. And maybe find out who or what the winter beast originally was.

But she doesn’t know what a spire messenger looks like. She was completely blind with no access to the viewpoints of others on the forgotten shore. It was only after they escaped that she obtained that awakened ability to see through other’s eyes.
A Spire Messenger now stood on the edge of the cliff, its terrifying black beak cutting the wind like a dark blade. The creature's once pale body was now utterly black, and its many powerful limbs pierced the ice with long, sharp talons.

I would think it more likely to be whatever person in the past froze the great river in order to build Verge. Cronos is too far in the future of the river timeline.

The mad Prince still had Daeron’s crown. Mad sunny was not defiled. The crown and whatever else happened- Neph’s death and the sin of solace- must have simply driven him mad. Not defiled, but insane
The Memories were given by the Spell, and taken away by the Spell.

Rereading the forgotten shore arc when he found the weaver’s mask for reasons and had a thought or two. Since the priests of the spell were tasked with spreading the spell to people, the leaders or priests of the forgotten shore seemed to have rejected or maybe even stopped the spread of the spell to the forgotten shore by imprisoning and isolating the high priest under their cathedral. So the people of the forgotten shore might not have had the advantages of the spell in fighting back against the darkness/ defilement. Instead of the spell as a solution or tool to fight against the darkness/ effects of the doom war, they chose their own solution, imprisoned the priest to stop the spread of the spell, created the false sun and slaughtered/ sacrificed themselves. Maybe the reason there was only one gateway in that entire region was because they imprisoned the priest of the spell, and it could not take root there deeply. In Valor’s turf we know of three gateways by name, and we know there are many more. In the Forgotten shore, which was a huge region, only one gateway existed. I think the spell uses the extra soul essence that isn’t absorbed by the creatures and spell carriers when they die to power itself and expand. Since all the essence in the forgotten shore was going to the crimson spire and the false sun, there was nothing to build the web of the spell. Hence only one gateway.
"Where is my eye? No… no, it doesn't. But… if I may be so bold as to ask, how do you know the name of that enchantment, my Lord? This Sacred Memory of mine only possesses two. It was only the two holy Masks that possessed a third — and even then, very few ever learned about it."

Mordy is just a sociopath. The deaths of others don’t mean anything to him.
"Remember, Sunless… I am not even a real person. I've been conjured by the Spell to play a role in this Nightmare, and so, there is no purpose for my existence outside the Nightmare. So… wouldn't it be a fitting end for a creature like me, to be killed by a real person like you? By a person who will conquer the Nightmare?"

Also the most vulnerable in this nightmare. His flaw is always knowing if he is being lied to. Which means if he hears the hideous truth that is causing the defilement, he would know immediately. No defense. And then he can command others and be heard to spread the madness
"It's hard to describe. I've met abominations who could talk like humans before, but never one who seemed so… human-like. Even among the Defiled. In any case, it looked like he was not happy about being the Dread Lord's slave. Or liked what the Dread Lord has done after becoming the tyrant of Verge."

Sunny was wearing weavers mask in the dream, so it might not have been obvious to the prince who it actually was…
Sunny suddenly remembered the dream where he met the remnant of the Mad Prince. The hatred in the abomination's voice when he called Sunny a murderer.

All those bright stars sparkling in the woven tapestry of the nightmare spell. Souls ?
…What happened to the souls of those who died within Nightmares? Of those who died in the Dream Realm? Of those infected by the Spell?

Where does all the stone come from?
The structure itself was tall and imposing, built of roughly cut black stone. Tattered white banners were hanging from its walls, fluttering in the wind. It looked nebulous and sinister, like a temple of some dark deity.

After a somewhat inelegant disassembly procedure, a sample of the device was sent back up to Terminus so that Nico and the technicians could examine it and counteract the effects.

Just everyone in the capital. There is the whole rest of the planet to kill still.
[Just great. Now we have to deal with two worlds full of religious zealots. I don't intend to kill every soul in this system, so someone needs to come up with a plan in the next five minutes before the engagement starts.] Max ordered.

Since they were living on the river, it was a water nightmare creature as there is no land for a burial. When she died, she was “buried” in the river- wrapped in her shroud and dumped in the water .
"...Well, anyway. Regardless of all that. At least we know now that the sybils did not literally hide inside a huge pyramid with their people. They actually came to the Great River, which existed outside the natural flow of time, and was thus far removed from the doom that they were escaping. That doom… it had to be the war between the daemons and the gods, right? That was why they eventually couldn't hear the voices of the gods anymore. Because the gods died."

So the heat inside the unholy titan burned away the sea completely when it shattered leaving the nightmare desert. Then the black stone structures scattered throughout the desert are it’s shattered remains. Was the black stone skull/ citadel it’s head? If so, no wonder it had a gateway in it. Is the unbearable heat in the desert the remnant of the titan’s fire? So many questions!
Following the end of the battle, the Demon of Dread created a mystical river out of the titan's blood, and built a pyramid out of its stone flesh. The pyramid stood where the ocean had once been, and…]
