Chapter 1: The First Edit

The worst day of Ellie Smith's life began with a pop quiz and a betrayal by reality itself. Calculus equations swam on the board, a language of pure gibberish, and as Mr. Davies's droning voice faded into a distant hum, her panic crested. I'm going to fail. He's looking right at me. Just below her line of sight, translucent blue text shimmered into existence against the scuffed classroom floor:

[NARRATION]: Ellie Smith was quite certain she was about to fail.

Ellie froze, blinking hard, but the text remained. Her heart hammered against her ribs as proof arrived ten minutes later—a big, red F circled on her quiz, the narration coldly confirming,

[NARRATION]: The proof was in her hands, a scarlet brand of her own stupidity.

The humiliations piled up throughout the day, each one annotated in that relentless blue script. She tripped in the hallway, books scattering, as the text declared

[NARRATION]: Her clumsiness struck at the worst possible moment. The final blow came when Liam Carter, the boy she'd liked since freshman year, seemed to smile at her. Her breath hitched, but he walked past, his attention already on his friends.

[NARRATION]: Liam Carter did not notice her.

Ellie fled to the girls' bathroom, locking herself in a stall and pressing her forehead against the cool metal. She stared at the final, cruel line:

[NARRATION]: It was just another day Ellie Smith wished she could rewrite.

Rewrite. The word echoed, a desperate, crazy thought. She focused on the text, pouring all her frustration into it. A sharp pain bloomed behind her eyes, but she mentally grabbed the sentence, willing it to change. The text flickered, distorted, and then reformed

: [NARRATION]: It was a day that would change everything.

A jolt went through her. Scrambling for her failed quiz, she focused on the red F and the narration above it. Not an F. A C. Just a C-minus. The pain in her head intensified as the text glitched violently before snapping into place:

[NARRATION]: A passing grade.

She looked down. The red F was gone. In its place, a C- was circled, the ink looking as if it had been there all along.

Ellie stared, her blood running cold and electric at the same time. This was power. Real, terrifying, impossible power. She wasn't just reading the script anymore. She was the editor. A slow smile spread across her face, a mix of wonder and grim determination. She looked at her reflection in the stall door, a girl who had just rewritten reality. "Okay," she whispered, her voice steady despite the shaking in her hands. "Let's try that again." Her gaze drifted back to the script, to the line about Liam Carter. A new, dangerous idea began to form. The headache pulsed behind her eyes, a warning she chose to ignore.
