And the granfather would look for influential and wealthy families maybe even a noble family as they are still part of the British empire and would be British themselves. And please don’t even try to push modern ideals I know stuff like slavery sucks but one guy can not change it it takes time and a society has to be developed enough to end it. It’s why undeveloped countries do it still to this day even when other countries try to end it forcefully. And pushing modern ideals is garuanteed to get the mc killed or lose everything including friends who grew up in this just like the MC is as well like you said the MC died young so by the time he has finished his childhood he died so him as a chield in this world would be considered the beginning of his adult like or where he learns more about society and gets his ideals. Sorry for this rant just take it as advice please I’ve seen to many authors push modern ideals in a historical setting or being outliers who treat women differently or something or don’t do something everyone else rich is doing when in reality it would get them killed or disliked.

Plus being able to support more children rather than someone with some small farmland having it go to his eldest son and his sons family. Where as a more wealthy or stronger one have there children more opportunity’s second and third sons being able to inherit some while more than half still goes to the eldest and daughters being able to be married into wealthier families who were able to give her a better life than someone’s daughter from a pore family would get
