English writing skills play a crucial role in achieving high - quality written work. Here are some important writing tips: **I. For Beginners** 1. **Reading Examples**: - Read elementary - level English books and writing samples. By observing how others write, beginners can get a sense of the basic structure and language usage. 2. **Starting with Simple Sentences**: - Begin with the simplest sentence structures, such as the "general - specific - general" (total - score - total) pattern. For example, when writing about a hobby like "I like playing football and singing", this straightforward structure helps in getting started without feeling overwhelmed. - Avoid using advanced vocabulary and complex clauses at the beginning. Focus on using simple words and basic sentence structures, and use conjunctions to ensure smooth flow and correct grammar. **II. For Intermediate and Advanced Writers** 1. **Reading Widely**: - Read excellent English essays, articles, or magazines. This exposure helps in expanding vocabulary and understanding different writing styles. 2. **Using Advanced Grammar and Vocabulary**: - Incorporate more sentence patterns, clauses, and advanced grammar. For instance, replace common words with more sophisticated ones, like changing "good" to "excellent" or "well - done", "people" to "individuals" or "persons", etc. - Use advanced conjunctions like "First of all, moreover, last but not least" instead of basic ones. - When constructing sentences, transform simple sentences into complex ones. For example, change "The boy is sweeping the floor, and he is my brother" to "The boy who is sweeping the floor is my brother". - However, only use advanced elements when sure of their correct usage. If not, it may lead to more errors instead of enhancing the writing. Also, ensure proper paragraphing; avoid writing a single long paragraph. 3. **Highlighting with Rhetorical Devices** - **Using Double Negatives**: - Double negatives can be used as a rhetorical device. For example, instead of writing "The postman comes on time every day", one can write "The postman never fails to come on time" to add emphasis. - **Applying Inversion**: - Inversion is a great way to make sentences stand out. There are different forms of inversion: - **Negative - word - led Inversion**: If a sentence contains negative words like "never", "not", "seldom", "hardly", starting the sentence with these negative words and inverting the subject - verb order can make the sentence more advanced. For example, "I will never marry you" can be changed to "Never will I marry you". - **Location - adverbial - led Inversion**: When expressing the location of something, start with the location adverbial and invert the subject - verb order. For example, "Our library is in the center of our school" can be written as "In the center of our school lies our library". This form also allows for adding more clauses to make the sentence more complex and interesting, like "In the center of our school lies our library, which is between the garden and the teaching building". - **Only+Prepositional Phrase - led Inversion**: For example, "Only in this way can I improve my English". - **Adjective+as+Subject+be - verb Inversion**: Such as "Young as I am, I can manage it". - **Using Passive Voice**: - English often uses the passive voice more frequently than Chinese. For example, instead of writing "We can borrow five books at most, and we can keep them for ten days", it is better to write "At most five books can be borrowed at a time and they can be kept for ten days" as it is more in line with English language habits. - **Employing Participle Structures**: - Many adverbial clauses can be transformed into absolute or participle structures. For example, if there is a sentence "If such is the case, you should apologize to her", after removing the conjunction "if", considering the subject relationship and changing the verb form, it can be changed to "Such being the case, you should apologize to her", which becomes an absolute construction. **III. General Writing Tips** 1. **Imitating Good Writing**: - Imitate excellent articles when writing. However, before starting, be clear about the central content to be expressed. 2. **Choosing the Right Sentence Structure**: - Beginners can use simple sentence structures, while intermediate and advanced writers can use more advanced ones. 3. **Adding a Conclusion or Guidance at the End**: - In different types of writing, such as emails, notice letters, or argumentative essays, it is beneficial to add a concluding statement. For example, in an email, one can write "I am looking forward to receiving your letter soon"; in a notice letter, "please give him the message"; in an argumentative essay, "All in all, In short" etc. 4. **Using Common Structures**: - The general - specific - general (total - score - total) or general - specific structure is commonly used in writing. - Writing templates can also be combined and adapted for writing. 5. **Exam - Specific Writing Tips**: - **Pre - writing**: - Do not rush to write. First, analyze the type of the article, whether it is an argumentative essay, an email, etc. Then, spend about 3 minutes thinking about what to write. - Build an outline or a train of thought. For those with a weak foundation, it is advisable to write down the general central content in Chinese on a draft paper. For those with a better foundation, simple markings can be made. This step should take about 2 minutes. - **Writing**: - Then start writing, which usually takes about 20 - 25 minutes. 6. **Using Key Sentence Patterns**: - There are some key sentence patterns that can be used in writing, such as "It`s adj. for sb. to do", "so... that", "too... to do", "such... that... ", "not... until... ", "The reason why + sentence is that + sentence", "That is why + sentence", "That is because + sentence", "It is said that + sentence", "It is reported that + sentence", "There is no doubt that + sentence", "It goes without saying that + sentence", "There is no need to do", "There is no point in doing...
