ROB is a nice guy like that, dropping you in the Si Wong Dessert (where Appa got stolen) even more so. In the beginning, you have only two powers. Call and Contact. You will draw nearby people to be your host and you can talk to them after they pick up the ring. Over time as your host does things or acts certain ways or might even have pre-built powers, you can gain something similar. If you get put up with a thief? You'll learn to dampen noise, be more hidden and if you bond deeply, complete actions or fights or "quests" you can learn to go chameleon and more. These traits you gain, you could pass on to your next host. If you get a Fire bending host and stay with them a while, you can eventually gain the ability to grant fire bending to your hosts. I wrote a book once. It was an unhinged fantasy born from my high-school brain, driven by loneliness and too many hormones.
