পরবর্তী পর্যায়ে বাংলাদেশের জনপ্রিয় উপন্যাসের ধারা নামে একটা বিষয় লক্ষ করা যায়। প্রয়াত লেখক হুমায়ুন আজাদ একে অপন্যাস বলে আখ্যায়িত করেছেন। সব দেশেই ক্লাসিক ধারার বাইরে এরকম সস্তা চটুল বা পর্নোটাইপ উপন্যাস থাকে। সেখানের পাঠক জানেন কোনটা ভালো, কোনটা মন্দ রচনা। আমাদের সমস্যা ভিন্নতর ও ভয়ংকর। আমাদের দেশের অর্ধশিক্ষিত বা কোমল পাঠকরা ইতিমধ্যে ধরে নিয়েছেন এগুলোই প্রকৃতপক্ষে উপন্যাস। একটি স্বাধীনতাযুদ্ধে অংশগ্রহণকারী, ভাষা-আন্দোলনকারী জাতির জীবনে এর চেয়ে পরিতাপের, দুঃখজনক আর কী হতে পারে। হুমায়ূন আহমেদ, ইমদাদুল হক মিলন, প্রণব ভট্ট, আনিসুল হক বা আরো অনেকের নাম উল্লেখ করা যায়। তাঁরা অনেকে প্রতিভাবান, সে-নমুনাও তাঁদের অনেক রচনায় লক্ষ করা যাবে। তবে তাঁরা ব্যবসায়িক কারণে এমনসব বস্ত্তকে উপন্যাস বলে আমদানি করেছেন আমাদের জন্য যা ভয়ংকর পরিণতি ডেকে আনতে বাধ্য। হুমায়ূন আহমেদ প্রতিভাবান লেখক। তাঁর প্রতিভা নিয়ে সন্দেহ করার কোনো কারণ নেই। কথাসাহিত্য ছাড়া অন্যান্য মাধ্যমেও তিনি প্রতিভার স্বাক্ষর রেখেছেন। শঙ্খনীল কারাগার, আগুনের পরশমণি নিয়ে তাঁর যাত্রা শুরু হয়েছিল। তাঁর হাতে আরো ভালো কিছু হবে – এমন আশা আমাদের ছিল। সহজ-সরল ভাষা দিয়ে চরিত্রের ভেতরের গূঢ় রহস্য প্রকাশ করার অসাধারণ ক্ষমতা রয়েছে তাঁর। মানুষের মনস্ততত্ত্বকে হিউমারবেষ্টিত করে উপস্থাপন করার তাঁর নৈপুণ্য আমাদের মোহিত করে। ঈর্ষণীয় জনপ্রিয়তা পাওয়ার পর ব্যবসায়িক মোহ সংবরণ করা সহজ নয়, তিনিও তা পারেননি। ফলে অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে পৌনঃপুনিক তরল অহেতুক হাস্যকর কাহিনি আমরা পেয়েছি তাঁর কাছে। সায়েন্স ফিকশন, শিশুতোষ ও গুটিকয় সিরিয়াস উপন্যাস দিয়ে তাঁর ক্লাস চিনে নিতে পারবে পাঠক। জোছনা ও জননীর গল্প, মধ্যাহ্ন ইত্যাদি উপন্যাস, তিতলি বেগম, বিড়াল ইত্যাদি শিশুতোষ কাহিনি এবং আরো কিছু পারিবারিক কাহিনি তাঁকে স্মরণীয় করে রাখবে। হুমায়ূন অ্যাবনরমাল সাইকোলোজি ব্যবহার করে হিউমার সৃষ্টি করেছেন, যৌনতা তাঁর উপাদান নয়। মধ্যবিত্তের জীবনের নানা ক্লেদাক্ত দিককে নিপুণ দক্ষতায় তিনি ব্যবহার করেছেন। হিমুবিষয়ক কাহিনি প্রথমত উপভোগ্য হলেও পরবর্তীকালে একই বিষয়ের বারংবার ব্যবহারে তা বিরক্তির উপাদানে পরিণত হয়েছে। ইমদাদুল হক মিলন শক্তিমত্তাসহ আবির্ভূত হলেও পরে তিনি সস্তা রোমান্টিকতা ও যৌনতার দিকে ঝুঁকে পড়েন। ফলে সিরিয়াস কোনো পাঠক তাঁর উপন্যাসের দিকে চোখ ফেরাতে পারেন না। অথচ ভূমিপুত্র, নূরজাহান তাঁর লেখা, ভাবতে অবাক লাগে। সাহিত্য বিনোদন নয়, এই কথা বহুবার উচ্চারিত হয়েছে। আমাদের এ-পর্বের লেখকরা সাহিত্যের এই মৌলিক উদ্দেশ্য সম্পর্কে সম্পূর্ণ অচেতন থেকে সাহিত্য রচনা করে চলেছেন। আশি-নববইয়ের দশকের অনেক গল্পকার উপন্যাস লিখে সিদ্ধিলাভ করেছেন। ওয়াসি আহমেদ, নাসরিন জাহান, মঞ্জু সরকার, মইনুল আহসান সাবের প্রমুখ লেখকের নাম গর্বভরে উচ্চারণ করা চলে।
