Chapter 4: Page 3: The Thoughts Of A Hokage [REWRITTEN]

The Hokage was not a simple man, though he may put up a front as one, he would describe himself as nothing but knowledgable, how else would they call him the God of Shinobi.

.

So when a lower clan member from the Hyuga clan came with rumors about what the majority of the Hyuga clan did almost ritually every month, of course, he sent ANBU to confirm or deny that very fact.

.

To say that the confirmation, after the ANBU came back, that most of an entire clan beat a single child every month disturbed him, would be an understatement, and he still has nightmares about the decision he made to this day and could see her face every time he closed his eyes.

.

See, the way The Third Hokage saw it at the time was like this, while saving the child would be largely beneficial to the child, and would brew a sense of debt in the child to Konoha. But having the guided hatred for her clan brew inside of the child would benefit him in the long run for his overall goals. Too many people would say that Sarutobi is a kind hearted individual with good morals, and he is for the most part. But with the way the world is at the moment with the strong prevailing over the weak time and time again, he believes he has no choice but to constantly try to undermine the strong for some semblance of equality in the masses.

.

For example, do you really think that the God of Shinobi, of ninja, who specialize in information gathering, didn't know that his friend, Danzo, orchestrated the Uchiha massacre, no of course he did. Not only did he know it went on behind his back, but he also approved of it. His dream, for the ideal world one he shares with Danzo, is one with no strong individuals, with everyone on equal footing, where civilian and clan members alike will prevail on equal ground and no one person will rise over the other. While that is a completely idiotic dream, it does look good on paper. But that's all it looks good on.

.

For example, in a world with everyone starting on equal footing, there will always be those who rise above, it is just the natural order of the world. So what will you do then to those more talented, suppress the strong or smarter, kill them? See that's the problem with that way of thinking it leads to an unrealistic series of events, which Sarutobi just doesn't understand.

.

So back to his decision on that fateful day, as his ANBU was kneeling reporting what the situation was to him. He decided, like the massacre of the Uchiha clan, that if a single individual were convinced that their clan was corrupt, or had more benefit in being gone, then that individual could be 'persuaded' to get rid of their clan, and the world would be better without one less strong man. With absolutely no traces back to him, if he plays his cards right.

.

But Sarutobi didn't really understand his situation very well. By creating an outlier like Itachi, you create a singular point of power for something like a Dojutsu, or Sharrigan, that is larger than the whole of a clan. Because the powers of said Dojustu start fading into myth, with a single generation, and no person would be left to accurately understand how to defend, except the elders which weakens the world.

.

Not as smart as he might seem.

.

So today Sarutobi lays, in his usual bed with no warmth by his side, which has long since been gone. Thinking back to his decision with the former clan heiress, and wondering if he made the right choice... he knew deep down in his cold heart he didn't. But his ego pushed away any thoughts of freeing her... saying it was for the greater good, and would all work out in the end. And he resigned himself for many long nights of restless sleep ahead, filled with nightmares of beatings, and children crying, no he wouldn't get any sleep tonight.

.

.

.

In the night The Third had a nightmare, though not the one he normally had with either him as the child being beaten or watching. The thing is that Ninja are overly spiritual, with a deep understanding of what dreams, and have a sense of wariness about all of them. In the ninja world, dreams are considered, warnings, or explanations, from deities or spirits that tell you what to look out for, to have them is considered a great honor, and a testament to your battle prowess. So it came as quite as a surprise to him when he found himself in his dreamscape, his village burned to the ground, villagers screaming in the distance somewhere he couldn't see, and a baby crying for its mother.

.

Panic struck him, with overwhelming guilt that followed, he knew, he knew that whatever this was is his own fault like a godly finger being pointed at him he paled. He frantically looks around for a way out of this hellscape, and In the distance he could see a figure of a young girl or woman he couldn't quite tell, she walked with confidence and power, in her wake buildings collapsed, and villagers and shinobi alike were cut to shreds, and as the Third stand there watching his village crumble into nothing, and his shinobi die, on his knees crying with guilt so physical it felt like his nerves were on fire, and just like that his dream ended. And he awoke in a cold sweat.

.

Looking around his room and seeing it was almost daylight he used the rag by his bed to clean off his sweat he was used to, and tried to ignore the pulling feeling in his gut, as he got up to make his morning tea. He had a meeting with his student today, and he didn't have use for depressing thoughts.

.

.

.

On his way to his meeting with his favorite student, Jiraya, he couldn't keep his mind from wandering back to that dream. The terror in his gut, and the screams of the villagers, all still very present in his head. He was so lost in his musings he failed to notice the stares the villagers were giving him at his facial features, if one were to describe him, they would say he looked like one hundred and ten years old, with a dead puppy.

.

The Hokage thought about what the dream could mean, he thought for any other solution. The woman could have been a rogue ninja or even a foreign one, he thought of many different solutions, but that wouldn't correlate with what he was worried about before he went to sleep, so that left only one conclusion, the girl.

.

Since he had left her in that situation, it had been almost three months, and if he was correct, last night should have been the one-month anniversary since she last had her beating.

.

To Shinobi, dreams are sacred, not to be ignored, lest you reap what you sow. Therefore, according to his beliefs, faced between ruining his plans and finding a way to stop the destruction of his village, his decision was a no-brainer.

.

As he rounded the corner for the Ninja Academy, where his office was located, he decided then and there, that the child would be taken out of her home. He might be too late, but he would have to live with his choices. He didn't know how long the abuse had been going on before the Hyuga clan member had reported it, but he knew it was a while since they seemed to suffer from an extreme amount of guilt. If it were his choice he would personally guide her hatred towards her clan, and he will probably do just that. But now that he knows her probable future he needs to make contingency plans for her turning against the village, and he will probably need Jiraya and Danzo for that... As takes a sip of his tea he can't help but scrunch up his face in disgust, even his favorite tea has lost its flavor when faced with this decision
