Reynold Alwyn lives, barely, in the slums of the city of Partisian, locked in the middle of the Empire. With no power and no money, he is always struggling to keep himself and his family alive and well. Along with that, he can't even develop a Mark. However, when a crisis occurs and his family's life is on the line, a visitor appears and offers him a way to escape his tragedy. With nowhere to go but up, Reynold will do anything and everything to achieve his goals, but will he fall to his enemies first or will he be swallowed up by the world above him?
