Chapter 5: SYSTEM FUNCTION

' Is coming here really the best choice? ' Roan was at loss when he entered his unit's camp.

An orchestra comprised of agonized groans, hurried footsteps, and unrestrained conversations filled the air. Its melody echoes all around, effectively giving the camp a boisterous image.

Finding a small safe space for himself, Roan quietly sat down.

While resting, Roan inwardly called out the system.

' Hey! How can I activate the system? Is there a menu of some sort? '

Replying to Roan's question, a transparent game-like screen appeared in his front.

======================

STATUS

LIST OF SKILLS

SHOP

======================

*Ding* [ You currently have 1,458 Lifeforce. Each Lifeforce is equivalent to one year of the host's lifespan. ]

' I have that much? Isn't that too much? How can I earn lifeforce, is it similar to my vassal's? ' Roan thought of Remlend's ability to take the life force of those that he kill

*Ding* [ There is a lot of ways that the host can use to acquire lifeforce. The host can: take the dissipating life force of those that die twenty meters from you, suck the life force of those you kill, take your vassal's life force, refine materials with abundant life force, and you can also take the life force of those that are willing to give their 's. ]

' Wonderful! Great! ' Roan chuckled, then he chose to see his status.

======================

Name : Roan

Affinity : Darkness

Class : Animator of the Dead

Lifespan : 1,458 years

======================

Looking through it, Roan couldn't help but become disappointed. The status panel was bland and underwhelming, it was a farcry compared to the status panels present in RPG games

'Having the ability to exactly determine my strength would have been great.' Roan disappointingly went back to the menu and chose the second option.

======================

*CLASS SKILLS*

Corpse Control

Create Zombie Minion

Create Skeletal Minion

======================

*Ding* [ You can see a skill's description by selecting it, and you can use LF to upgrade skills. ]

Following the system's announcement, Roan selected a skill he fancies.

======================

*CREATE ZOMBIE MINION*

A skill that can turn a corpse into a zombie minion that will follow the caster's commands. Each time the skill is casted, it could turn one corpse into a zombie minion and would cost 5 LF ( Five years of your Life )

UPGRADE : 300 LF

======================

' This looks quite formidable, wouldn't it be great to have a horde of zombies? ' Roan thought as he selected another skill.

======================

*CREATE SKELETAL MINION*

A skill that can turn bones into a skeletal minion that will heed to every command of the caster. Each time the skill ks casted, it could turn a skeleton into a skeletal minion. Every cast costs 5 LF ( Five years of your Life )

UPGRADE : 300 LF

======================

' It is almost identical…. ' Roan then selected the last skill he has.

======================

*CORPSE CONTROL*

This skill can turn a corpse into a puppet. After the skill is casted, the puppet will look like how it originally was before it died.

Drawbacks: the puppet cannot be autonomous and would need the caster to manually control it; the puppet will only have ten percent of its previous fighting prowess; the puppet will continuously consume life force to be properly maintained.

The current cost of maintenance : 1 LF/ year

The cost of every cast : 50 LF

UPGRADE : 1,000

LF

======================

' This one is expensive as hell… but then, this skill would be very useful in pretending to be someone else…. '

Finished looking through the skill descriptions, Roan pondered how to effectively make use of his set of skills.

With his current circumstance, if he fully utilized his skills, it wouldn't take long to build a legion of undead. But doing so without proper preparation would be foolish.

Cutting off his thought process, Roan proceeded to go to the system's shop.

======================

*SHOP*

Grimoire of 'Fireball'

Grimoire of 'Ice Shard'

Grimoire of 'Earthen Bullet'

Grimoire of 'Shadow Cloak'

Grimoire of 'Silent Step'

Grimoire of 'Titan Form'

Grimoire of .....

...….

...….

======================

As Roan looked through the system shop, he couldn't help but be amazed by the myriad of items he could buy. The shop sells everything he could think of --- food, metals, alloys, household materials, ready-made armors, bows, swords, and magical items.

Seeing the Titan Form available in the shop, Roan immediately clicked it.

======================

*TITAN FORM*

An active skill that strengthens the caster's body by combusting life force. The level of transformation depends on how much Life force the caster combusts.

Cost : 20,000 LF

======================

' So… this skill would essentially kill the caster if he doesn't have a way to gain or recover life force… '

Going back, Roan then looked through the other skills that caught his eyes.

======================

*FIREBALL*

An active skill that constructs a ball of fire that the caster would be able to control. The fireball's size, level of heat, cost of casting depends on the caster's mastery over the skill.

Cost : 10,000 LF

======================

======================

*ICE SHARD*

An active skill that lets the caster construct a controllable ice shard. The Ice Shard's size, coldness, and cost of casting depend on the caster's mastery of the skill.

Cost : 10,000 LF

======================

======================

*SHADOW CLOAK*

An active skill that can only be used in dark places. After activated, the caster would perfectly blend to the dark background.

Drawbacks: Can only be used in dark places; doesn't mask the sound of the caster's movement; the skill only hides the caster from the naked eye and would still be detectable using other methods.

Cost : 1,000 LF

======================

======================

*SILENT STEP*

A semi-passive skill that lightens the user's footsteps to minimize the noise generated when walking or running.

( Semi-passive skills are skills that can be activated and deactivated at will. )

Cost : 100 LF

======================

Seeing the descriptions of the skills, Roan's eyes couldn't help but brightly shine. Each skill he saw holds immense potential in their respective use.

He was so excited that he kept on alternatingly look at the skills.

Only after a couple of minutes passed was he able to rear back his excitement and it took considerable effort to keep his hand from spending every LF he owns.

With his emotions in check, Roan continued looking through the shop for something useful.

Time passed, after twenty minutes of scrolling down, Roan was able to find a couple of items he needs.

The items he planned on buying: a well-crafted spear, a gambeson, chainmail, two daggers, a pair of wooden slippers, and a resilient long dull tunic that would conceal his chainmail.

' If I buy an item in the shop? Would it just appear in my front? '

*Ding* [ Depending on the host, he can either directly receive the item or make the system store the item.]

*Ding* [ Please be informed that normal items bought from the shop can only be stored by the system once. While special items like the grimoire of vassalship can be stored by the system in an infinite number of times. ]

' That's good to hear… ' Roan heaved a sigh of relief and bought the items he needed.

All of the items combined cost 148 LF, and the breakdown are as follows: the well-crafted spear cost 50 LF, gambeson cost 20 LF, chainmail cost 30 LF, the daggers cost 16 LF, slippers cost 2 LF, and theresilient dull tunic cost 10 LF.

Satisfied with his shopping spree, Roan stood up to find a place to change his equipment. And after a couple of minutes of wandering, he found himself in the area dedicated for the soldiers to relieve their nature's call.

Going inside one of the toilets, he saw a pit on the ground, a mound of dirt that is used to partially bury the deed after finishing, and fresh leaves

Although there wasn't any visible excrement inside the pit, it still smells like hell. He couldn't help but feel pity towards the people that would relieve themselves here.

Not wanting to overstay his welcome, Roan summoned the items he had bought and hurriedly changed.

After going out of the toilet, Roan asked the surrounding men where he can get his ration. To his disappointment, the designated time to eat had already passed and he can no longer get his ration.

Since he can no longer receive his food, Roan scanned Yulio's memory for a bit and decided to go to his designated tent.

-------------

Roan walked twenty minutes or so before he found his tent. Walking inside, no one was around. Only the clouded smell of sweat lingered.

Sitting on the corner, Roan looked around one last time. After making sure that no one was really inside the tent, Roan summoned the food he had bought. And with great gusto, he started devouring the sour bread.

*chrrkkk*

*chrrkkk*

*chssttk*

*chllggg*

The sour bread and chicken soup slowly filled his stomach. While eating, Roan would occasionally check the surrounding in fear of someone barging in.

Time passed flew fast….

Just as Roan was cleaning up the bread crumbs that had fallen to the ground, a couple of footsteps and familiar voices started closing in on the tent.
