Chapter 28: Chapter 28 – The Hunt

It wasn't going well at all; Phoenix and Crusher couldn't get information at all. It was like sending in a mouse to do a tanks work which would never go well. A mouse can't push through trenches or enemy troops.

Silk had tried to go into town but without success, the people all scattered as soon as he was seen and he couldn't get a disguise because he couldn't interact with the sales people. He wouldn't steal right now, it wasn't urgent yet.

Getting two sticks he tried starting a fire but he couldn't get a spark. He suddenly realised how stupid he was being, he could create sparks easily. Activating an enchantment, he created a spark which made the sticks and leaves catch fire. The fire was started.

He heard a rustling in the bushes. "Who is it," he shouted. Intuition told him that someone was watching.

"No one," a familiar voice called back.

"That makes sense." Silk got up and quickly pounced at where the sound came from. Nothing was there.

A snigger was heard from behind a tree.

"You're in it now," Silk shouted angrily. Gathering his strength, he sent threads in all directions like a web. He could sense everything in a wide area, his namesake came from many reasons after all. He soon found the perpetrator.

"I give up," she flinched after seeing Silk.

"Good, I need your help. My friends are useless," Silk smiled.

"Anything she stuttered. I'm doing lord Oak a favour by talking to you," she justified her actions a bit weirdly.

"He's doing you a favour by giving you a chance to redeem yourself. I might kill you for injuring me otherwise and I don't mess up assassinations." Silk warned but then thought of something else, "I also don't mess up sabotage."

"What do you want from me Silk?" she grinded her teeth.

"I want you to report at the campsite every day from now on and give me information," Silk told her.

The Grand Mage suddenly relaxed after hearing that was all he wanted. "What information are you looking for now?" She asked more chirpily now.

"I am looking for the knight Charles," Silk informed.

"I don't envy him," she muttered under her breadth. She then started speaking more loudly, "he is with all the other knights in the garrison." She paused then started speaking in a very condescending voice, "the garrison is the one with all the knight running in and out from."

"Cool." Silk smiled again, "now run away like a good little Grand Mage."

He returned to the camp. Now all he had to do was wait for the others to start the hunt. The smile on his face became more vicious, Silk was looking forwards to seeing the surprised looks of these mirror kind.

"Run little prey. I haven't felt so ready since his waking up," Silk laughed. He now had purpose, right now he would do anything as long as he felt it would lead somewhere.

He saw two people at his campsite, it was only Phoenix and Crusher.

He waved and ran up to them, "did you find the knight then?"

They looked down slightly ashamed. "No," Crusher answered.

"Let me get this clear, you go into a town every day and can't find this knight while I wait idlily and find him. It isn't hard," he raised his voice. "You see the building where all the knights go into, that's the garrison. The garrison is where the knights gather so that's where we will find a knight."

"That makes sense," Phoenix admitted feeling a bit bad.

"Just learn from this," Silk sighed exasperated. "I'll go out in the night for reconnaissance, you two can start trying to look into where to find a negotiator named Adam."

Silk then climbed a tree and sat on a branch facing the city wall to wait. When darkness came the hunt would begin.

The cover of darkness wasn't one hundred percent necessary for him to succeed but Silk never turned down even the slightest edge in anything.

Darkness soon took over from the light.

"Time to begin," he said licking his lips. The thrill of the hunt was hard to resist for someone with even the slightest amount of demon in them.

He jumped down from the tree easily and started stealthily approaching the walls. He had to keep as much cover as possible so no one would see him approaching. No mistakes were allowed in Silk's mind, he had a target destination and nothing would stop him.

It didn't take long for him to reach the wall but his instincts were starting to take control and with it his magical and physical power. Silk had to be careful to not let the demon in him take over as it could be disastrous. The last time that Silk had done that he had become a demonic general for the demonic army.

He scaled the wall skilfully and without much trouble. Looking to his left and right he saw a guard with his sword drawn. Silk made an unnatural clicking sound in his throat to show his displeasure.

"Get away from here," the guard warned.

Silk tilted his head, he wanted to kill this guy but something in his head was holding him back. Acting quickly, he sprang and (in a flash) he had the guard in a headlock. The guard was soon subdued and Silk threw the unconscious body under a table.

It wouldn't take long for someone to find the guard so he had to act quickly. Looking from up high he could see the garrison, it was the biggest building in town. Two knights were walking in to the building which confirmed his deduction.

A strange memory and thought appeared in his mind. Conjuring up some strange magic which didn't have a trace of Silk's normal magic ability he opened a different storage space with his magic and pulled out a smiling mask. It was white and was carved with a simple smiling face fitting Silk's face perfectly. He also got out two knives out of the space, one being a meat cleaver and the other a curved serrated knife called a karambit.

The knives and masks had strange enchantments that any sorcerer could tell didn't have the same the same hallmarks of Silk's enchantments. The lines made the effect of the magic just as effective but Silk usually made the lines elegant while the lines on the knives and mask were sharp and ruthless.

He jumped down the wall and activated the enchantment making him invisible to the naked eyes. It bent light around him so it was like he didn't exist, it was a more advanced version of air manipulation but a lot less versatile.

He walked up the street carefully to not make noise and attract unnecessary attention. He stalked the streets like an experienced predator with his eyes on the prey. He was patient walking carefully but still swiftly.

A bell suddenly reverberated onto the town. The guard was probably found. Silk could only curse his bad luck that he was found out this quickly.

He moved more quickly but with his knives at the ready now to dispatch of any unlucky person who bumped into him around a corner or such like.

The cleaver could cut through bone easily with a heating enchantment while the knife injected a part of his magic into his opponent. The magic would be rejected by the opposing party's body and acted as a poison because magic isn't easy to reject when in the blood system. This was a standard tactic in the demonic war being an easy enchantment however it had another trick of converting magic into electricity to stun for capturing opponents. The electricity could cause cardiac arrest as well.

"Oomph," a guard exclaimed knocking into Silk around a corner.

Silk clicked his tongue annoyed. This guard had to be killed now, he didn't know how common invisibility was here but even if it was rare the guard could put two and two together.

"Who is it?" the guard shouted. "Show yourself and I will just let you off with a warning."

Silk looked her up and down noticing that the uniform was different to the guards, it was a knight. This made thigs more difficult.

"Show yourself in the name of the knight's order or expect the harsh embrace of death," she warned.

Silk started circling her looking for openings. She was pretty good but had a few, it was impossible to have non and he had the advantage of surprise. The armour didn't have many openings either and covered the whole body.

He pounced and swiftly cut at the neck.

The woman counter with her sword and instinctively moved to avoid the knife. The sword was cut the sword like butter.

Silk started circling but to his surprise she circled around with him which indicated she could see him. This made things harder. This time Silk attacked at the body.

She tried to move out the way but the heavy armour restricted her.

He stabbed the knife into her armpit, and finished facing away from her. He turned and she was already on the ground from the poison. The poison was fast working as she had little to no magic resistance, she probably classed it as secondary to physical training which was true in the most part in this place. Oak had most likely made magic into a profitable business here so only the best wold learn to do it well with the red robed faction.

Leaning over the dead knight's body he reached down taking out his knife and cleaning it on the victim's cloth garments under the armour. Blood shouldn't be kept on weapons as it caused rust, he now had enchantment to prevent this but habits were to kill for this now mostly demonic creature in Silk's body.
