Chapter 1: The Beginning
Hi! My name is Anna. I don't have a family name because I'm just a girl born in a commoner family. Only those who born in royal or aristocrat family can use the family name. My father just an ordinary iron miner and my mother just a common housewife. I live in Border Town, a city in Southern provinces of Graycastle Kingdom.
If I could choose, I would rather choose to born as a man in this world because at this time a woman has a lower position than a man. If a girl lucky enough, she will grow as a normal woman, getting married, have children and maybe in her old age, she can hold her grandchild. But those who unlucky, they will awaken some power in their body, the power that called demon power by Church. That's why, the woman with that power become enemy of the church and if they get caught, they'll execute in front of people. They call this kind of women as the witch.
When I was a kid I often pray to god so I can become a normal woman when I grow up later. But the fate seems unfriendly with me. It starts 4 years ago when I'm 10 years old and my family was taking refuge at Longshot stronghold during the Demon season. Our poor financial situation didn't allow us to able to rent even a small hut in there. We have to live under the tent that we build in open area together with those who can't afford to rent a house from Border Town.
It was a harsh winter season. Our limited financial can't make us buy firewood or even charcoal to keep us warm. The thin blanket that I bring from Border town also unable to resist cold winter wind. My parents warm their selves by embrace each other when they sleep, meanwhile I must shivering from freezing air in the corner of the tent.
That's when it all started, I was feeling about to freeze when a warm energy suddenly emerges from my body and envelop me, and dismissing all cold and freezing air from surrounding me. I don't know whether to happy or sad with this condition. I should happy because I would never feel cold anymore but also sad because if anyone knows my ability, they will report me as a witch. So I decided to keep my ability as a secret for everyone including my parents. This is how I able to survive this far during that winter and three winter seasons after that.
I succeed to keep my secrets safe for four years from everybody. I don't ever try to train that power or using it to help me during the house chores. Until that accident happen. The mine where my father works suddenly collapsed and trapped my father. That news sounds like thunder in my ears. Without father, who will support our family? Together with two of my neighbor, Susan, and Ansgar, I try to find my father in mines to rescue him.
When we find him, what we saw is a shocking scene. My father lied in the ground with one of his leg crushed under a cart that fully loaded with iron ores. There's another miner beside him with one hand holding a pick and his other hand searching valuables in my father clothes. That man clearly tries to rob my father when he was unable to defend himself! When he saw us, he rushes to us and knocked Ansgar down. After that, he tries to knock down Susan and me too. Without thinking anything I raise my hands to block his attack. Along with that block, my power also surges within my hands. With a blast of the heat wave, that man was throwing down with a charred body like roasted duck and dead. My neighbors who saw that making a vow to me to keep this as a secret between us. They know if I didn't do that, their lives also in danger because the man wants to eliminate every eyewitness for his crime.
We remove the iron ores from the cart first before able to lift the car and get my father's leg free from that. His leg was injured severely and maybe will not make him able to walk normally even when it already healed completely. We bring him home with a lot of hardship and after a healer come and give him some treatment and bandages, I can feel composed.
Next morning when I still sleep, without I realized, my father going out with his injured legs to finds town guards. When they come to the house, they drag me which still half-sleep from the bed and throw me in in dungeon prison under the town palace. One thing that I still remember is my father's sinister smile when he saw the guards drag me from home. That's the moment I know my own father has sold his own daughter for some damn gold coins. Isn't that ironic? The person that I save turn into the one who brings disaster to me. Start from that moment, I know that my life only in days left until they send me to death in front of the public.
The guard put something like a chain with a locket tied on it. Although that somehow decrease my power, it's not totally blocking my power, I still can release some of my power to warm this damp dungeon cell.
What makes me wonder is usually they will execute the witch in a fast manner. But after few days they still didn't do anything to me. Well, they only give me one meal a day in little amount, did they want me to starve to death rather than execute me in front of the public? But whatever they do to me, I've decided to face it bravely. I'd rather die in a dignified manner than die in miserable ways, crying and begging for mercy and forgiveness that they will not give to me. The answer why I still live finally answered couple days later. That's my first time meet him.
