Chapter 7: Mouse Trap

Angela is surprised that, despite the pain, she could still concentrate and remain clear-headed.

She knew that she had to take the knife out and quickly treat her wound in any way she could; she only had 50 minutes until the next mouse spawns. Slowly and carefully, Angela eases the knife out of her leg, wincing each time the teeth snag on her flesh. Hesitantly, Angela tries to stand up but she must have damaged some tendons as she is unable to move the injured leg.

Instead, Angela eases herself back down and opens up the medicine menu though she frowns at the lack of options.

Leaf bandage: 0.5 anima

blood restoration tablet: 1 anima

Currently Angela didn't want to go below 9 anima as that would require her to fight an extra mouse and so she decides to get two leaf bandages and one blood restoration tablet.

[Leaf Bandage: not the prettiest, nor the most effective, but its cheap and gets the job done. Primarily used to heal small wounds in a short timeframe but can also be used as a temporary measure until more effective methods are used.

restores 1 hp every 10 minutes, can only be used once per wound.]

[Blood restoration tablet: a basic medicine used to recover blood lost during combat; also has a coagulation effect to prevent further bleeding. Be careful though; consuming too many can cause blood clots in undamaged areas causing thrombus and embolism.

one time restoration of 5 hp to mortal rank practitioners, diminishing results as the user's strength increases.

Removes status effects: bleeding, anaemia]

Angela applies the first bandage to her knife wound, fumbling a little due to inexperience, once she finishes wrapping around she realises that she has never thought about what to do with the ends of the bandage. She thinks for a second before deciding to just tie it into a bow like a shoelace.

[bandage applied: hp regen +1/10 minutes]

With her experience from the first one the second bandage is much easier to tie and Angela quickly finishes before moving on to look at the tablet.

The tablet in question Is about the size of a thumbnail with a rose pink colour with a rough texture.

Putting it in her mouth Angela manages to swallow the tablet, despite the lack of water to wash it down with. The taste was similar to paracetamol so Angela could handle it quite easily. The tablet gives off a feeling of warmth as it goes down, subconsciously loosening her muscles that were overly tense due to the fight.

Only after she had treated her wounds did Angela leave the odd state she was in. The pain sweeps over her in waves and a nauseous feeling overcomes her senses. Bile rising up her throat Angela drags herself to the edge just in time to avoid the mess that promptly spills out of her mouth, dripping down into void. Angela coughs and vehemently spits out what is left and struggles to her feet, wiping her mouth; even the mud ball from earlier is preferable to this taste.

With her nausea dealt with for now Angela returns her attention to the island, staggering towards the connection to her platform. She sees the body of the recently slain rat but quickly looks away, forcing the bile rising again back down.

If she is to survive the remaining two waves with the little strength Angela has left she will have to find a different way of killing the mice. After pondering for some time Angela opens up the blueprint editor for the second time since it was unlocked.

For her idea to work she would have to once again use wood. Though dirt is cheaper it doesn't have the structural stability to be used for sections with small width. First Angela draws out a thin strip exactly one meter long and extrudes it to roughly waist hight; she hoped that the mice could not jump higher than that. Next she creates a hole in the board roughly big enough for one of the mice to fit through; this was necessary to restrict the path that the mouse could take without completely blocking it.

The creation was only a thin plank of wood and Angela was sure that if given no path the mice would definitely be able to break through it. Angela saves this creation under "mouse hole" which had a low cost due to the small width.

[mouse hole: 0.2 anima]

Once the mouse hole was done there was three more steps for Angela's plan to work. For the first step Angela takes the wood she cut out from the floor from earlier and whittles away at it until it forms a point, while it would be easier and faster to create it in the blueprint function since she already had the wood lying around she might as well use it to save some anima. Now equipped with the wooden stake Angela returns to the connection, places the impromptu wall and starts digging a pit in front of the mouse hole, groaning as her ladylike image was further ruined by the dirt getting under her fingernails.

Once the pit had reached a depth of around 60cm Angela stopped digging and planted the stake into it, firmly securing it into place using some of the dirt she had already excavated. Finally she went back into the blueprint editor for one last time to make a very thin piece of wood slightly bigger than the pit. After using the strength test tool to make sure the wood plate could hold roughly 70% of the weight she estimated the mice to be she finished up and named it "trapdoor".

Due to the thin nature of it the trapdoors cost wasn't worth mentioning and it was quickly put into place, completing the trap. Now all Angela had to do was wait.
