Chapter 17: Start the Training

Being used to waking up early, Otto did not strive away from this behavior. Having slept in a proper bed for the first time in weeks, he was even more rested than before. Sitting upright, the rays of the sun slowly were creeping into the room from the window opening.

Sitting at the edge of his bed, Otto glanced a look over at the little girl, who was still fast asleep. 'She looks so peaceful. I hope that it was a smart thing, taking her with me. No. It was smart, no matter what, I will not leave her side anymore.' Shaking off the previous thoughts, determination builds up in his eyes. He had a goal to protect, and he would never separate from his last family member anymore.

Turning his head, Otto looked over at the rainbow egg. 'The egg of a phoenix. That is what Mike called. I wonder what will happen if it grows up.' A curious smiled crept up as he slowly put his hand on the egg. "Enjoy the meal." He said with a whispering voice, as he used his magic to feed the egg.

After feeding the egg, Otto stood up. Changing his clothes quickly, he picked up his bow and some arrows, and his axe and walked outside towards the courtyard. "I cannot lack down on my training. Even if I change locations." He whispered to himself.

Arriving at the courtyard, Otto remembered the location where the soldiers previously trained. Walking towards that location, Otto wanted to test out the training field where Mike trained. Putting his items at a side, he picked up his bow, willing to shoot a few arrows.

"You are up early." Before Otto was able to shoot a single arrow, he was greeted by Mike. "Good morning kid." Mike walked closer towards Otto. Carrying with him, there was a small bag with some items in it, as well as his sword.

Looking at each other, Mike continued, "Show me what you got kid. I did not properly have the chance to watch your abilities previously." Taking an arrow, he walked towards Otto, who was holding a bow. Passing it over he signed Otto to shoot the arrow.

Not declining, Otto picked up the arrow and aimed at one of the targets that Mike pointed out. Releasing the arrow, it hit the target without any problem. Mike gave another arrow, which hit the target. And another. After having hit five consecutive hits, Mie finally stopped with providing new arrows.

"Good, I like it. But there are still a few things that are missing. We have to focus on improving those." Mike was impressed by the skills that Otto showcased. However, he clearly tried to hold back his praise, as he did not want to make Otto overconfident.

Walking over to pick up a practice sword, Mike threw it towards Otto, "Let's have a spar."

Catching the blade, Otto was a bit taken aback. "Sir… I have never used a blade before." Looking slightly around, his eyes met the axe which he had packed with him. At that moment something came up to him. "Sir… is it good if I use my axe? I am more familiar with it."

"Oh really? This is going to be interesting. Sure go ahead."

With the confirmation, Otto picked up his small throwing axe and prepared himself. He had killed several wolves with his axe, however, that was after the wolf was wounded by his arrows. He had never actually been in a real combat with only his axe.

"Come at me! With all your might!"

Raising his axe up high, Otto tried to find some weaknesses. Not noticing one, his only hope was to charge in, hoping that he might discover something during the fray. Axe rose up high, he started to charge towards Mike.

Mike was ready to receive the incoming attack. As Otto had minor combat experience, and could not even compare to Mike, he was just like an open book for Mike. Ready to be read.

Moving closer to where Mike was, Otto was certain that he would be able to hit with his axe. Before his axe was ready to be swung, the attack was disrupted by a loud scream. The scream echoed through the whole keep, to even reach it to the courtyard.

"Waaah!! Boter!!!"

'Mira!' Otto instantly knew who that voice belonged to. Dropping his axe, Otto forgot where he was, instinctively turning around, he rushed back into the keep, towards where the screams were coming from. As Mira was still in their room, Otto rushed over towards the room.

Entering into the room, Otto finally noticed what was going on. The girl was clumped up on her bed, staring at the empty bed of Otto. Her eyes were red and filled with tears. Her voice did not die down as she kept on crying out from her lungs.

"Mira!" Otto said with a worried expression. Not thinking twice, he rushed over to her side. Embracing her into his arms, Otto firmly hugged her. "Don't cry, Mira. I am here, I am at your side."

Feeling the embrace of Otto, the girl finally started to dim down.

"What happened here?" a worried famine voice called out from the door opening. It was 'Aunty Spring'. Her eyes were filled with worry, as she slowly walked forward. "Poor girl." Looking into the eyes of Otto, she spoke in a firm voice, "Don't let the girl cry again. Otherwise, I will be haunting you!"

Nodding quickly, Otto slowly petted the girl who was resting in his arms.

Seeing the peaceful scene, the heart of 'Aunty Spring' eased up. "Well whatever it is, don't wait long. Breakfast is ready."

Nodding gently, Otto looked again at Mira. Her big eyes, still filled with water, looked straight at him. There was a faint happiness that was protruding from them. Otto kept on petting the girl until she calmed down a lot.

After she calmed down, the two made their way to the common dining room. Again a large number of people were gathered in here.

Not knowing where to go, Otto walked to a random table with Mira in her tow. "Otto! Mira! Over here!" It was Kyle who called over. He had saved some seats for the two of them at the main table.

Slowly walking over, the two got seated and started to enjoy their breakfast. During the breakfast, Mike reminded Otto that he forgot his supplies from the morning training.

"Oh, morning training? What is that all about?" It was Theodor who involved himself in the conversation.

"Yes My Lord. Our new friend is an early bird. He woke up early in the morning, and I decided to train up with him a bit before preparing for today's training session." Mike replied with a proud voice. It was clearly noticeable that he was happy with the attitude that Otto showed.

"I see. Well, that makes our talk in a moment easier." Looking over at Otto, Theodor added on, "I will be waiting for the two of you. Come directly once you finished your breakfast." With that, Theodor took a big gulp out of his tankard, before standing up and leaving the room.

After Theodor was gone, Otto chatted with Kyle for a bit. Kyle would be busy with a scholar named 'Master Libir'. Being a scholar meant that Kyle would be busy with reading and writing for that day. It was one of the least favorite topics of Kyle. Instead, he was wanted to either focus on training other subjects, such as his swordsmanship.

After breakfast was over, Otto took the hand of Mira and walked over towards the direction of Theodor's study. Arriving at the door, one of the guards knocked on the door. Waiting for a response, he entered the room and conveyed that Otto and Mira had arrived. Getting a confirmation, the guard opened the door wide open and signaled for Otto and Mira to enter the room.

Entering the study room for the second time, Otto realized how beautiful it was designed. There were various trinkets and other knickknacks in the room.

Having entered the room, Theodor signaled the two of them to take a seat. "Please, be comfortable." Signaling behind him, he added, "As you can see, Sir Mike Strongyaw and Master Deerus Watrug will be joining us. We will talk a bit about what we can do for your and what we can expect from you."

Instead of replying, Otto nodded his head. He was prepared to do anything to improve his powers. Moreover, as he said to Kyle, he would help him out.

"Is there anything you want?" Theodor asked as he looked into Otto's eyes. The question was more symbolic, as he was already providing a lot to Otto. However, to his surprise, the usually silent Otto finally spoke up.

"Sir… I heard many stories from Kyle… he told me that there are many books in the castle. I would love to be able to see and read those stories as well."

Taken aback, Theodor slowly brushed his chin. "Hmmm…." There was a low uncertainty in his voice. Looking over at both Mike and Deerus, he finally decided to answer the question. The two of them nodded their head. They were also surprised by the unexpected proposal. However, they both understood the importance of it. "Fine, I will allow it. But only at the instance that you finish your training with the two new masters."

With that, James' schedule would be finalized. By swearing his fealty towards Kyle and the Jaeger family, Theodor would provide him with training, housing, and food. The training would be as followed, during the morning, Otto would focus on improving his physical powers. These would be done by working both on his ranged skills as well as improving his melee skills.

In the noon, his training would continue with 'Master Deerus'. With him, he would focus on learning more about magic, as well as improving his magical powers.

As for the reading, that would be something in his free time. He would be allowed to enter the castle library and ask for help from 'Master Libir'. However, everything else depended on himself to improve.

As for the schedule of Mira, initially, Theodor was planning to put her at work in the kitchen. However, after noticing her magical abilities and potential, he convinced Deerus to help Mira out with it. Because of this, the training schedule of Mira mainly consisted of training her magical powers together with 'Master Deerus'. Besides that, she would be able to roam free, for the time being.

Having set up and finalized their schedules, the two of them stood up and thanked the three sirs in front of them, before turning around and leaving the room.
