Chapter 16: First Intermission

Blair: Welcome to the first intermission! Today we're going to be discussing why our author died and hasn't updated in so long and maybe a few extra stories.

Lucian: Yeah, what's up with that? I know the readers all miss me~ *Dramatic wink*

Author: ...I can't believe I created you.

Blair: So why haven't you updated?

Author: Well, I entered my sophomore year not too long ago and it has been the worst thing ever. I'm taking multiple college-level classes (which was so not a good idea) and I've also been learning how to drive which takes up a lot of my free time. It's all probably going to even out in a month or so when I turn 16 and school starts to calm down. Until then, though, it's going to be sparse updates and a dead author.

Lucian: Wow, what a loser. Anyways, let's get to what you really want to see… The extras!

(っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ Extra One: The Toy Store ♥

Evander stared into the window of a toy shop with a pouty expression on his chubby face. Inside there was a girl with a froofy dress and a terribly made flower crown shouting at the other kids. They each scowled at her and stomped away. Soon, she was left all alone in her plastic castle with no one to play with.

He stared at her for a moment and decided to ignore her this time. However, as soon as he went to walk away, the little girl burst out into tears. His eyes widened before he made a split second decision to go in the shop. Evander stood in front of her with his hands in his pockets.

"Freya?" He asked quietly. Freya immediately stood straight up and glared at him through her big, watery eyes. "Go away, you broke loser!" She tried to look imposing, but it only made her seem smaller. Evander stared at her for a few seconds before walking away.

When he turned his back, her face fell even more. Freya sat on the jigsaw carpet and hugged her knees. She heard the voice of the cashier say, "Have a great day," then felt a light tap on her head. She looked up to see Evander with a lollipop in his hand.

He looked away with pink ears. "Sorry I didn't know your favourite flavour. Most girls like strawberry, though, so I got that." His hand was faintly shaking as he avoided her scathing gaze.

"I hate strawberry," Freya deadpanned. Evander stiffened with an awkward expression. She smiled a little at him and said, "Thank you."

The tense air immediately dissipated between them as she took the lollipop. She put it in her coat pocket and stood up. Just as she was about to say something, the door chimed. A woman in a gaudy dress strode in with her proud jaw pointed towards the ceiling. It almost seemed impossible for her to see anything based on how high her chin was, but she immediately recognised her daughter standing next to Evander.

The woman glowered and stomped over. "Freya Marie! What are you doing talking to that…" She struggled for the right word, garnering the attention of every patron. "...trash?!"

Freya visibly hesitated to answer her mother before saying, "I was just teaching him his place, Mother." The woman nodded in satisfaction at her daughter's response. She then grasped Freya's wrist and dragged her out of the toy store. Neither of them looked back, but Evander saw the little wave Freya gave to him on the way out.

He left the store with a smile and a story to tell his mother when she came to pick him up.

(っ◔o◔)っ ♥ Extra Two: Day in the Life of Dmitri ♥

Luca was patiently doing his classwork when out of the corner of his eye he saw a flash from the rooftop. A shock of blonde hair blocked the the light from his sight in seconds. It was his butler, Dmitri, fighting off yet another assassin. Luca looked away when he saw that the situation was under control.

The teacher called on him to answer the problem on the board. "Luca, what's 4 times 4?"

"42," the boy responded with no emotion. The teacher started to sweat under his penetrating gaze and could only nod with an awkward expression. When Luca turned back to his book, she released a sigh of relief.

Dmitri walked by the classroom and gave her a thumbs up. The teacher gave a bright grin back in return. He was the idol for all the teachers, male and female, because he was the only person who gave them respect in the entrie building. Working in an academy full of second-generation rich kids really wore down on your dignity, so the young butler was a breath of fresh air for everyone.

When school ended, Luca managed to disappear like usual. Dmitri groaned internally and went to the place that Luca usually escaped to: Evander's apartment.

Sure enough, they were on the floor playing video games. Blair poked her head out of the bedroom at the sound of the window and nearly dropped her phone. She pointed to Dmitri with a furious expression. "Stop breaking my window and use the door for f*ck's sake!"

Then, seeing the kids staring at her, she apologised for cursing and glared at Dmitri. He couldn't stop staring at her, marvelling at her appearance. She… reminded him so much of his own mom.

Dmitri sat down on the couch with a complacent expression. It was like he could be a kid again here. Maybe that was just Blair's natural Momma Bear aura, or maybe it was the fact that the entire living room was decked out in kids toys. Thinking about it, it was probably the latter.

The sun faded into dusk as the smell of dinner filled the air. "Boys, are you ready to eat?" Blair asked from the kitchen. All three of them jumped up and nodded frantically.

When dinner was over, Dmitri's phone started ringing. He excused himself from the table and went into the hallway. "Yes, Master?" Lucian's screeching voice sounded from the phone. Dmitri pulled it away from his ear but still couldn't escape the verbal thrashing from his boss.

"So are you finally done with slacking off you dim-wit?" Lucian asked, but his tone made it obvious that he couldn't answer no. So Dmitri could only say yes and force Luca to go home. Even with his protection, Evander's home wasn't totally safe.

Blair waved them off and told them to be safe when going home. Evander, on the other hand, spent five whole minutes saying goodbye to Luca.

Luca was visibly uncomfortable and struggled to escape his friend's grasp. Finally, they both left and drove back to the house. As soon as they got there, however, Dmitri kicked the boy out of his car and sped off into the night. Luca knew exactly what was happening and decided to placate his father before Dmitri got fired.

The butler swerved through traffic, doing some very illegal manuevers to get to his destination as fast as possible. He was tired and just wanted to get home, but some stupid assassin had to come and ruin his day. He tsked under his breath and broke the speed limit even more.

Finally, he pulled up to a very inconspicuous suburban house with a rifle in hand. Dmitri scowled and kicked down the door. "Who the f*ck here decided to make my job even harder, huh?!"

When the police finally arrived after getting an anonymous call, all thirty of the criminals were tied up and whimpering in a corner. They burst into grateful tears upon seeing the police and begged to be taken in to escape the "crazy blonde man." The cops were dumbfounded at the fact that the 3rd most wanted gang in the city was taken down by a lone man.

The man in question was currently asleep at home in his teddy bear pajamas, dreaming of the day when he would be able to retire and not have to hunt down assassins every week. However, deep down, he knew wouldn't replace his job with anything if it meant not taking care of Luca.

(っ◔-◔)っ ♥ Extra Three: La Mouette Fumante ♥

Only dedicated patrons were in at this hour. No one came to a dive bar this grungy after 2 a.m. out of fear. I, however, was stuck working the bar on this unpleasant Friday night. The archaic swing music struggled to escape the crackling speakers in the corner of the bar. I personally hated it, but then again, I was never a big fan of music.

One of the regulars sat at the counter and ordered himself a drink. While I was making it, another person sat down at the bar. I could see their outline in my periphery and noticed that it was someone I had never seen before. "Odd…" I mumbled to myself. Neither of them noticed.

Putting down the cup, I passed the man his drink and turned to her with a blank gaze. She responded with one of equal disinterest. Her wispy blonde hair was pulled up in a haphazard bun and all she wore was a pair of faded jeans, an ink-stained t-shirt, and some worn out flip-flops. Her dark eyes stared at me unblinkingly before asking, "What's the strongest drink you got?"

I asked her for an ID because she looked like she just got into college. The girl snorted and fished it out of her wallet. It was obviously fake, but I didn't call her out on it. Her eyes were highlighted by dark circles and a weary depression that pooled in her deep irises. She looked like she needed something- anything- to clear her mind.

I placed the glass in front of her, eyeing her head buried in her arms. "Miss? Everything alright?" I asked, unsure why. I usually never asked the patrons about their troubles, especially not women alone at 2:30 in the morning.

"It's nothing, don't worry about it." She mumbled from her arm cage. I could see her eyes peeking out from the crevice between her arms. "Alright, then drink up," I said.

She lifted her head up and I could see the traces of her tears glistening in the dim bar lights. She downed her drink in one gulp, coughing from the burning sensation. The notes turned flat by the speakers took over the atmosphere and covered up her soft hiccups.

Just when I was sure she wouldn't say anything again, she said, "I have to drop out of college by the end of this week. My parents figured out I changed my major and went berserk, taking away all the money I had. They even took what I earned at my job, saying that it was 'compensation for my heinous actions.' F*ckin' ridiculous…" She trailed off and asked for another drink.

She kept downing drinks until she was too drunk to walk straight. I watched as she opened the door into the early morning air with a knot in my stomach. I debated for a short bit before running after her. She was ambling down the sidewalk, head bobbing to silent music and body swaying in the light of the street lamps.

I grabbed her elbow just before she rounded the corner. "Miss, let me walk you home. It's dangerous to go alone." She gave me a gentle smile and nodded.

The girl chatted one-sidedly until we stopped at an apartment building. "Ah, this is where my friend lives. Thank you for taking me, sir." She stuck her hand out towards me. "What's your name? Mine's Blair, Blair Clarielle."

I took her hand and responded, "My name's Ferris. Nice to meet you."

Little did I know this would be the girl I would want to spend my life with, or that she would be the one to break my heart.
