Chapter 3: Joining the academy

A blinding flash of light followed by a drawn out whooshing sound drew Lu Fengyi from the darkness and threw him abruptly onto a grassy floor. He bounced several times before finally stopping, stiff and bruised all over.

'Far out! Couldn't the trip be any nicer? I don't expect it to be on the level of a first-class passenger seat, however at least make it business grade!' Lu Fengyi thought to himself as he rubbed the aching parts of his body.

[ Ahh! You must be the new transcender, Lu Fengyi. Pleasure to make your acquaintance ]

The voice of a young child sounded throughout Lu Fengyi's mind and he quickly looked around for the source of the voice, however he was alone on the vast grassy plains.

[ Haha! The most generic reaction of all newbie transcenders! Looking for a physical representation of a system. How hilariously human of you ]

Lu Fengyi shouted out towards the endless fields, "You're my system then? Could you please explain to me what is going on?"

[ Haha, oh no... haha! You're hilarious! I'm your system, you don't need to shout out to the world that I'm here. Why do you think I'm talking directly to your mind ]

'Ahh, so it's one of those systems. Just like in the novels I read.' Lu Fengyi thought to himself.

[ Indeed, I am basically the epitome of a generic system. Alright, we must start getting into the important stuff, otherwise my boss will punish me for wasting time again ]

[ First of all, you have been sent here due to your wish to gain more knowledge in some way or another. You should know what I'm talking about as either you felt this emotion before blacking out, or you've felt this emotion before and our systems were too backlogged to immediately transfer you in ]

Lu Fengyi nodded to himself, affirming the fact.

[ I am a subsidiary system that will be your introductory host for each of your timelines and I will be setting you tasks, or rather quests, for you to do during your time in each world. You will stay in each world until you are able to complete the quest, however if you don't fulfil the requirements, I cannot pull you out of the world, so try not to anger the locals alright ]

[ Now, I will give you a list of the details for this introductory trail of your brand-new system ]

A paper scroll with intimidating jade dragons engraved upon them materialised out of the air and landed in front of Lu Fengyi. He bent down to retrieve it before unrolling it and reading the contents.

Selected World - Library of Heaven's Path

Time Frame - The Hongtian Academy entrance test that took place just before the story began

Restrictions - None

Quest 1 - Become a student of Zhang Xuan

Quest 2 - Perform public face slapping (0/3)

Quest 3 - Reach Dingli realm before Zhao Ya

Lu Fengyi rolled up the scroll before thinking to the system, 'So my goal is to complete these three quests?'

[ Indeed, that's all you must do to complete your first major task. As you can see, the quests are quite easy and will serve as a simple tutorial for you ]

'Quite simple? You call reaching Dingli realm before Zhao Ya quite simple? Are you out of your mind?' Lu Fengyi yelled within his brain.

[ How rude. Just because I don't have a mind doesn't mean you can insult me like this. I'll have you know I have enough experience to judge what's easy and what's not. In any case, you have the power of knowledge. You have read the story line and you already know approximately what will happen! Now, go out there and try it out ]

'Wait! I still have some ques...' Lu Fengyi sighed as darkness engulfed him once more, 'I guess I'll have to get used to this then.'

"Hey! Are you okay?"

A gentle hand poked around his waist area tentatively. Lu Fengyi awakened from the darkened consciousness, only to meet face to face with the ice-cold floor, 'Far out! How ruthless can this system be? Not only does it dump me every single trip, it dumps me in the middle of a city as well?'

Lu Fengyi sprung up, instantly regretting the actions as the newly obtained bruises pierced his nerves once more.

"If you're injured, you shouldn't move too much. Here, take a recovery pill."

Lu Fengyi felt delicate hands pry open his mouth before a surge of energy sent a capsule down his throat. Moments later, he began to feel a soothing sweep of energy pass through his body, revitalising and rejuvenating the injured parts of his body. He had written about this feeling countless times during his author career, however feeling it in person was truly different from simply imagining it.

Soon, Lu Fengyi felt the injuries that he had sustained from the fall disappear entirely and the residual energy from the pill coursed silently through his veins. Refreshed, Lu Fengyi stood up and saw the one who had saved him, a young girl. She had long, silky hair and donned the robes of a cultivator while her eyes radiated the essence of innocence itself.

"Thank goodness you're okay. I would be terrible if you were to pass out right before your exam."

Lu Fengyi smiled at her sweet and timid voice, "Thank you very much for helping me cure my injuries. I had a bit of a fall, so you really helped me out a bunch there."

"No problem at all! You're here to take the exam as well right?"

'Ahh, the system did say I was being placed at the time the Hongtian academy exam would run.' Lu Fengyi thought as he patted himself down and turned towards the examination hall that had been set up. In front, stood a group of children, each muttering and memorising pieces of information or patting their chest, boasting of their certain success.

A tall, imposing looking elder walked out of the tent before shouting out to the audience, "Next is Lu Fengyi. Please enter the examination hall to take the test."

The girl gave Lu Fengyi a light pat on the back, "Good luck with your exam!"

Lu Fengyi nodded and strode confidently towards the hall. He had studied hundreds, if not thousands of ancient Chinese historical texts in order to obtain the knowledge one needed to write upon the topic of cultivation. Menial test for children like these should pose almost no difficulty!

The examiner watched as Lu Fengyi walked in with that confident and even arrogant smile upon his face. Gripping his pen a little tighter, the examiner flipped to the most difficult questions of the book, 'Hmph, if this kid thinks he's hot stuff before he even begins the examination, I'll just have to crush his hopes right here and now.'

"Lu Fengyi, please write down your answer to the following questions. Name a method to circulate qi around the body faster and compa..."

Lu Fengyi's pen scribbled away.
