Chapter 3: The 4 Types of Magic
The next morning, Damon wakes up and gets a flashback on what happened the day before. Thinking it was just a dream, he goes to do some labour at the farm.
Soon as he starts working, he saw Eleanor, the little girl in, what was supposed to be, his dream.
Damon froze, he was very confused and wasn't sure about what to do. In the end, he ran up to her.
-"What are you doing? I told you to stay inside the barn at all costs. I can't afford for anyone to see you.", yells Damon
-"Damon? Who's she? I saw you guys from the house."
Just when things couldn't get any worse, Damon's sister, Elizabeth, shows up.
Elizabeth is about the same height as Eleanor. She was a very kind girl, who always listened to Damon and helped him. Damon trusted her, so he explained the whole situation.
-"Can you please keep this away from father? He will kill us all if he knows about this just like he did to our mother.", asks Damon while bowing to his sister.
-"Don't worry, I would never do that. After all, you're my dear brother.", replies happily Elizabeth before going back to the house.
Damon sighs of relief and takes Eleanor behind the barn where no one could see them.
-"Alright, now that we're alone... I would like to ask you to teach me more about magic."
-"Why should I do that? What will you give me in exchange?"
-"I will become The Paladin and save your world.", answers Damon with a confident smile on his face.
Eleanor bursts into laughter.
-"You become The Paladin? Don't make me laugh. It's not as easy as it sounds like. The Tower of God was created by God himself, only the bravest and the most powerful magician can overcome the challenges."
Eleanor feels slightly intimidated by the look on Damon's face. He was serious about this.
-"Fine, I'll teach you the fundamentals of magic. But, if I see that you can't keep up, I will stop teaching you."
-"I will do my best!"
-"Magicians are sorted into 4 categories, fire magicians, water magicians, earth magicians and wind magicians. Unfortunately, I do not have the right tool to know which element you have the highest compatibility with. However, being a certain element user does not mean you can only use said element, it means your magic is more powerful and you will be able to use high-level spells when using that element. Which brings me to my next point: You shouldn't rely on just one element, by using different kinds of elements you will boost your magic conductivity rate and as a result, you will be able to generate even greater power... Are you listening? You are ignorant and inexperienced. In this world, there is still an untold number of magical truths that you know nothing of. Inexperienced as you are, the more you learn, the sooner you'll be able to open those infinite doors of knowledge! From now on, call me Master, as I'll be teaching you how to use magic spells. Also, bring me some food, I'm dying of hunger."
Damon was stupefied by how much the world of magic was vague. He couldn't stop thinking about what Eleanor just explained to him. He went back to the house to get some food and came back with pottage and bread.
"So, urm... When can we start?"
"You can start now with a basic fire spell called 'Ignitus', and you better be able to use it before I finish eating."
Damon checks his surroundings to see if anyone is watching and starts his training.
-"Ignitus!"
Nothing happened.
-"Ignitus!... Ignitus!... IGNITUS!"
Still nothing.
-"You idiot, you need to keep your hand wide open and concentrate. Try thinking of fire or the colour red, it may help."
Damon closed his eyes and started thinking about the fireplace in their home. Opened his hand and concentrated so intensively he could barely hear his surroundings. He felt his body getting lighter.
That was the moment.
-"Ignitus!", shouted Damon while opening his eyes.
A fireball shot out of his hand and hit a tree.
-"HOLY C***, THIS IS AMAZING.", said Damon with excitement.
It started burning so Damon put out the fire before anyone saw it.
And just like that, 2 weeks had passed with Damon learning the basic spell for each element:
-Fire: 'Ignitus', a fireball that shoots out of the hand.
-Water: 'Purraim' a fast and strong water jet that comes out of the hand.
-Earth: 'Chasmatias' makes the ground collapse.
-Wind: 'Ventus' a strong wind coming out of the hand to destabilize the opponent.
One day, when Damon was coming back home, he found his father waiting for him. He tried to go to his room without paying attention to him but he started talking to him.
-"Why are you always coming back home late these past 2 weeks?... And why are we running out of food faster than usual?", asks furiously his father.
Damon was scared and couldn't answer him. His father got closer to him. He had Damon's wrist grasped firmly in his hand.
-"If you don't tell me any time soon, you will share the same fate as your mother. Whatever it is, I'll find out.", says the father with a smile, then leaves the house.
Damon started crying. There wasn't anything he could do anymore, that's when his sister came to him.
-"Common Damon, you are stronger than this. I know you will find a way out of this... Just like we have always done."
-"You know what... I think you are right. I will go far away from this village, buy a house and make you live with me. I don't know how much time it will take but I'll definitely come back for you.", announces Damon happily while hugging his sister.
Damon goes out in the cold rainy night to explain the situation for Eleanor. She seems to be shocked for a moment.
-"There is only one thing we can do... We need to go to my house at Elvenheim. There, you can enrol in the magic school of Elvenheim: Haecceitas, with my recommendation. But, we can't go with Elizabeth. Only magic users can go to Elvenheim. She's still a little kid, opening her magic pores will be a burden for her body and she will die."
This made Damon uneasy; leaving his sister all alone with his psycho father. But there was nothing he could do. He went back home packed his clothes in a bag and left without anyone noticing. Eleanor was already waiting for him outside.
-"Are you ready for this? There's no going back now."
Damon looks one last time at his house with a tear falling down his cheek.
-"Yes, let's go."
-"Close your eyes and give me your hand."
Eleanor held both of his hands and started saying some bizarre words.
-"Open your eyes now, we've arrived."
Damon slowly opened his eyes, and just like that, they were at Elvenheim.
