Chapter 36: Royal Capital

After attaining his official status as a member of the Magi Association, Ventus and Richard planned their next steps. Since Ventus's father had died, Richard would have to return to the Lumina Kingdom's Magi Association branch headquarters and inform his demise, afterwards he would return to his research, training and normal life since he had discussed with his apprentice that it was time for him to experience a greater social environment than the village he had been living up to this point.

After a week deliberating and analyzing options, the master-student pair decided that the best way to experience the social hierarchies all in one package was for Ventus to move to the Lumina Kingdom's Royal Capital and enter the royal institute so that he could learn more about society and as well as actually have a proper education on the various subjects of knowledge and not just the art of combat and magi arts as he had been learning until now.

As soon as they decided their next steps Richard summoned forth his bubble transport art and immediately took Ventus to the capital city of the Lumina Kingdom, the travel took three days due to the fact that even though it was a minor kingdom, the territory it possessed was quite significant. Also, since Richard was still a human and had to rest and recover his mana, they had to stop at least a day to properly restore their strength.

After finally arriving on the skies of the royal capital, the shining bubble stopped and hovered silently whilst the pair admired the massive structure. Richard had already been to this place several times before so any of this was old news to him, but to the trio that resided in Ventus, that was a new sight they had never seen before.

"The times truly change the world eh?" Ragnar's sigh sounded in the boy's mind.

"What an exciting place young one! So many lives and so much history, I'm sure you're bound to have a rich experience in this place!" The avatar's cheerful voice chimed in.

"So…big!" Said Ventus stunned at the sight.

Most people accustomed to the place wouldn't say that this place was big, in fact, they would often complain about how small and overcrowded it was. The royal capital was a city that sat on top of a grand mountain that had roughly four hundred square kilometres in size and housed several different structures on it aside from the Lumina's Royal Castle.

If one were to have Ventus's advantageous position, one could clearly see that the city was physically divided into three layers as well as roles. The top most layer was were the royal and nobility were housed as there were several palaces and the royal castle on it, in the middle layer were where the merchant district, the wealthy merchant's homes as well as several other foreign powers buildings such as the magi association headquarters' tower and also the Royal Institute were Ventus planned to go. From such height, Ventus could not make out many details as they hovered hundreds of meters in the air, but Richard pointed and explained, so he easily understood the structure. And lastly, in the lowest layer, stood the slums, which unfortunately existed in every place of society where the poor and unfortunate survived and the evil that lurked in every corner of civilization lurked in hiding.

Surrounding the capital were mighty mana arrays and defensive treasures that constructed a dome of faintly glowing energy that enveloped the whole city in its protection, thus, there was no need for physical walls since the barrier was just enough. However, between the layers were massive stone walls with a single huge gate in the middle that allowed for passage, but was also heavily guarded by the king's army with at least a hundred soldiers placed atop the walls and twenty guarding the gates at all times.

The glowing transport bubble descended on the magi association headquarters and quickly entered the magical building, the pair quickly meeting with the same scenario they met in the nebula stronghold's branch tower. As far as Ventus could guess, the tower was not supposed to be a place more than it was designed to be a tool, it had a purpose and served it with perfection, thus the boy figured that it must be a standard look for the towers spread throughout the globe.

After a brief conversation with the staff of the tower as well as an hour-long meeting with a Grandmaster magus that managed the tower, the pair finally proceeded towards the royal institute situated somewhat close to the upper layer wall. On the way, Ventus observed how vibrant the city truly was.

The streets were laid with cobblestones and magical runes that always kept the stones in pristine condition, leaving them without any sort of scratch or crack whatsoever despite the constant use of the merchants and travelers that rode from place to place or even the weight of whatever manner of beast or carriage that stepped on the seemingly fragile roads. Every road and street had lamps with special engravings that were powered by small mana crystals inlaid in the metallic light posts that had on top of them floating pure light spheres that automatically shone as soon as the sun went down keeping the capital always lit up no matter the hour.

The shops and buildings, by a policy applied by the king, had their structures, no matter how shabby, reinforced as soon as they were built by the royal magi or if the owner or owning organization of said structure preferred, they could and absolutely had to by the king's law, reinforced the building with other magi not appointed by the king. If any were found without a certain degree of protection, they would receive a fine and could even lose the whole building depending on the degree of infraction.

The building varied in many sizes, materials, purposes and owner. They were colourful and attracted several gazes and walk-ins towards them whilst they sold their wares or their services, and besides those, there were also several beasts roaming around. They were either used as load carriers or even used to pull carriages but those functions were only attributed to the weaker beasts or those more utility driven, the mightier and more combat driven beasts were instead used by the army as mounts or put to fight against other beasts or humans in the arena as gladiators for entertainment and gambling, as well as earning a quick buck as well as fame and glory as a combatant.

The pair walked at a moderate pace and as such Ventus had plenty of time to observe his surroundings, but just as every journey must have an end, so did his wandering and fun. The pair had arrived on their destination, the Royal Institute.
