Chapter 3: Tomas Croissant

Within a large crowd of families making their way to the Selection, a scrawny boy could be seen walking by his lonesome. He was thin like a stick, and had pale skin as if he was malnourished. An almost-black, dark brown fringe covered the entirety of his forehead, and most, if not all of his eyebrows revealing only his clear-cut violet eyes. The boy appeared to be very young as not a hint of facial hair could be seen surrounding his slightly protruded lips.

"Why exactly did I have to wait an entire year to take the Selection all because of this Mageri Wiszckeria?" The pale youth grumbled, annoyed as he grudgingly dragged his feet towards the Selection grounds alongside the crowd. His mother had specifically instructed him to sit out last year's Selection just so he could attend this one. All for sake of maybe, just maybe he would be lucky enough to be selected by Mageri Wiszckeria. 'Yeah right, like they would ever choose me.' He thought mockingly.

He knew his own ability well. In elementary class, whereas others only needed 3 to 4 days to awaken their Mana Pool, he required a whole week. As for consolidating his foundation, it took even longer. And now that he was also a year older..., he shuddered at the thought. He most likely wouldn't make it to an ordinary top tier institute, much less the famed leading institution itself.

He eyed a bunch of younger children happily walking, and talking with their mothers. Meanwhile, his own mother was too busy gambling to accompany him. "Stupid mother." He mumbled before he unwillingly dragged himself to the venue.

The pale youth soon arrived at a large open dome stadium where the Selection was taking place this year. Several long lines extended from the main entrance to all the way across the street. The youth shook his head as he motioned to the end of a line behind a burly youth.

"A-are you h-here by yourself as well? M-my folks were too busy to come." The burly youth in front of him anxiously spoke.

"Same. Name's Tomas, Tomas Croissant. You?" The pale youth called Tomas replied nonchalantly as he glanced at the burly youth facing him. The burly youth had thick eyebrows, and was exceedingly well-dressed; he wore a red and black suit with a tie, top hat and everything. The burly youth's face broke into a goofy grin.

"Did you know that your surname-"

"Is the name of a bread. I know, heard it a million times." Tomas cut in on the burly youth. "What's your name?"

"Owen Garfford." The burly youth excitedly answered as he reached out his plump hand.

"Sorry, I don't really do handshakes." Tomas firmly rejected. "Oh." Owen disappointingly retracted his hand. "Well, any idea which school you want to attend?"

"Next!!" The female clerk called out from the booth. "Owen, I think its your turn." Tomas pat the burly youth on his shoulder with his frail arm. "Oh, then I'll see you inside?" Owen asked.

"Maybe."

"Ok, well, it was nice meeting you!" Owen waved his plump arm, turned his sturdy body, and rolled right up to the booth.

"Are you an examinee, or a spectator?" The female clerk asked lazily. "Examinee." Owen answered after a bit of thought.

"Name?" "Owen Gafford." "Age?" "I'm turning 8 this August." "Ok, please head into the hallway, and enter the fourth door on your left, do not go up any stairs, thank you." The female clerk finished. Before he headed inside, Owen turned around, and gave Tomas one last wave with a big goofy smile on his face. 'This guy.' Tomas couldn't help but grin as he looked at Owen run off inside the stadium.

"Next!!"

"Are you an examinee, or a spectator?" "Examinee." "Name?" "Tomas Croissant." "Age?" "9." "Ok, please head into the hallway, and enter the first door on your right, do not go up any stairs, thank you." The female clerk directed Tomas.

Following the female clerk's directions, Tomas went into the stadium hallway.
