Chapter 94: Vol[2]Chapter#16 Countered

(It whipped its tail?)

Tolm's face revealed confusion as he thought over Lowen's words.

The surrounding soldiers heard Lowen's explanation and were left utterly speechless.

As everyone seemed lost in thought, it was the snake that made the next move. Stretching itself upward, it rose up about 60 feet and it once more flicked its tongue a few times. Once it seemed to have located its prey, it squinted its eyes and hissed before lowering itself back to the ground and slithered its way toward a few more soldiers.

Lowen sent a bit of his energy along down his arm and his sword unraveled itself. Walking forward, he looked at where the Mantha was heading and said.

"Looks like I'm up."

It was now that Tolm snapped back to reality and tried to say a few words but Lowen had already vanished from where he stood.

(This boy, does he remember the plan.)

But as he saw where Lowen reappeared, he smiled before turning to his men and roaring.

"Men, the next part of the plan is starting, so get your asses ready and prepare to move."

Tolm gave out his orders and a subordinate nearby waved a flag in a certain pattern, relaying his orders to Glen who was further away in another position.

Lowen had arrived at the location indicated on the map and looked around at his surroundings. On the ground, there were two metallic nets with hooks jagging out of them. Lowen had memorized the map earlier and knew exactly where he needed to be and what he needed to do. Picking up a large piece of a fallen wall, Lowen aimed carefully before chucking it hard in a certain direction.

*Wham*

The piece of broken wall smacked the Mantha dead center on the back of its head and crumbled into rubble. Although it did no damage, that wasn't its purpose. The Mantha rose up and turned its huge carriage sized head around before flicking its tongue. It could make out the shape of a small heat source, it was about to ignore it and head back to its original target when just like earlier, another piece of a wall smashed into its face.

*Wham*

The Mantha shook its face side to side before squinting its eyes and staring hard at a small boy not too far away. When it saw Lowen, it hissed in confusion and thought that the large debris couldn't have been thrown by this child. Looking around it flicked its tongue a few more times but still couldn't spot its enemy, finally, it decided to again head toward the soldiers. Lowen saw this and grew impatient and with a shout, he started throwing insults at the Mantha along with more rocks and boulders.

"Hey you stupid snake, come this way. Hey did you hear me you oversized ugly slug, get your fat ass over here and face me!"

The Mantha's eyes suddenly widened, it didn't know what this small child was saying but it knew it was being insulted. Lowering its body it slithered toward Lowen and when the two were face to face it didn't hesitate for even a second.

*Swish Crack*

Lowen knew it was coming and was already prepared but it was still too fast. Lowen had leaped out of the way when the snake whipped its tail but a few nearby rocks had been flung up and towards him while he was still in the air. With a few slaps, Lowen had knocked away the most dangerous pieces that had come for his eyes and simply allowed the rest to hit his body, causing them to break apart on contact. These rocks flying at Lowen at hundreds of feet per second would do little more than sting a little when they hit him. The ones flying at his eyes, however, were a different story entirely. Lowen's skin had become incredibly tough and durable but his eyes were still very much vulnerable. If a rock had struck one of his eyes, the amount of time it would take to recover was much too long whilst in the middle of combat and could easily cost him his life.

With all of this debris flying high up, another cloud of dust rose and blocked everyone's vision, well everyone except Lowen's of course.

Again, neither Tolm, Glen or any of the soldiers had seen the snakes attack, it was simply too fast. So when they saw Lowen standing there and then suddenly an explosion of rock and dust fly everywhere, many were worried. Only when all of the debris had finally settled and the cloud of dust had dissipated, did everyone heave a sigh of relief. Lowen had landed safely away on a nearby roof and the Mantha was down below struggling. The metallic net had done its job on the first try. When the Mantha swung its tail down, it had pierced its own tail on the hooks jagging out of the net and with the net nailed down with 6-foot metal rods, the snakes tail had practically become immobile.

Tolm and Glen both saw this and signaled one another and with a quick confirmation, the order was given.

"GROUND FORCES ATTACK!"

The ground trembled as more than 200 soldiers wearing full armor came stampeding over. Glen being a battlemage was the first one over, he quickly joined up with Lowen and the two nodded at one another and with blades drawn they attacked together. Lowen with his sword and Glen with a spear struck out.

*Clank Clank*

Lowen and Glen's weapons struck the sides of the colossal Mantha almost simultaneously but could only make shallow wounds at best. Glen had cut about an inch or so deep while Lowen's sword had managed 6 or 7 inches. On a creature that had a body nearly 16 feet around, these wounds were little more than bothersome to the Mantha but still, it had a reaction. When the blades cut in, the Mantha twitched and struggled, trying to swing its tail but the net held. Lowen saw this and knew this would be a drawn out fight. Lowen and Glen struck out a dozen more times by the time the soldiers had gathered. With most of the soldiers here, they all surrounded the Mantha with spears and they all thrust out repeatedly.

*tink tink tink tink*

The Mantha's body proved to be incredibly tough though, as not a single soldier could penetrate the sides or back of the snake whatsoever. To the Mantha though, it seemed to be growing even more angered. Although the soldiers couldn't penetrate the snake's body, to be jabbed and poked repeatedly must have felt like hundreds of needles pricking the skin and the Mantha's reaction was not small. It began struggling even fiercer and more violent. It hissed and threw its head around and a few unlucky soldiers couldn't avoid it.

*Crunch Squish*

At least 2 had been completely crushed while another had both legs crushed.

"Someone help that man and pull him back. The rest of you maintain your attack and watch this thing's movements, it's pissed."

Another soldier pulled the injured soldier away and everyone ignored the other two who had died and pressed their attack, there was no time to worry about the dead. The Mantha continued to struggle violently as it looked around crazily for any way out. Its tail may be unusable at the moment but the rest of its body wasn't.

The Mantha raised itself high up above the ground and aimed towards a group of soldiers. Tolm knew exactly what it was about to do and yelled out.

"MOVE OUT OF THE WAY IT'S COMING DOWN!"

Those that could, had quickly jumped out of the way but a few soldiers, seeing the Mantha rise up more than 60 feet, had frozen in this snakes domineering shadow and with that hesitation, that shadow was the last sight they ever saw.

*Crash Splat*

The Mantha had thrown its body down with tremendous force, squashing more soldiers beneath its body and collapsing the ground 3 feet underneath it. The ghoul standing next to Tolm watched on in horror.

(My fault, this is all my fault. If I would have never have come here, this stupid snake would have never of woken up.)

Tolm's thoughts were different from the ghouls, he had seen this Mantha make a few moves and he was quickly coming to an understanding.

"Lowen, Glen, keep attacking, when the snake rises up, its stomach will be exposed, that's your chance, don't hesitate!"

Lowen and Glen both nodded and continued their attack whilst at the same time waiting for their opportunity, which didn't take long.

The Mantha, still being stuck, rose up to more than 60 feet.

"NOW!"

Lowen and Glen moved at the same time but with Lowen's speed, he was their long before Glen.

Lowen added some energy to his sword, increasing its sharpness and thrust forward right into the Mantha's stomach. This time, instead of going only 6-7 inches, the entire blade, nearly 3 feet in length, sunk completely in, all the way up to the hilt. The Mantha felt it this time and before Glen arrived, the Mantha had swung its upper body frantically, causing Lowen with his sword in hand to go flying.

Lowen's body was seen soaring backward in the air and was about to crash into a building but with great agility, Lowen flipped his body and absorbed the blow into his feet before kicking off with a powerful jump and launching himself forward right back at the Mantha. The Mantha was already starting to spurt a large amount of blood from that wound but as Lowen came flying in, he swung his sword as he went by and drew a long horizontal slash across the Mantha's body, causing even more blood to spill. Landing on the ground, Lowen looked at the Mantha and smiled wide.

"Not too bad, I suppose."

The Mantha's body came crashing down but this time everyone had avoided it.

Tolm and the others looked on with shock.

(This boy, he's even better then what Clovis's report said. This kid, he's incredible.)

A large amount of blood began to pool beneath the Mantha and the soldiers began to cheer but the cheering didn't last long. The Mantha with its long body, it extended its head forward and instantly wrapped its upper body around an old building. Tolm saw this and shouted.

"Men stop it! it's trying to break free!"

Everyone was too late though. With its full effort, the Mantha used the old building like it was a foothold, and its body like a pulley system and with its tail still attached to the metallic nets, it pulled the net from the ground, like a tree from its roots. The huge pulling force tore the net from the ground and the snakes tail was once more, free. The Mantha wasted no time and with the metal net still attached to its tail, it whipped it around like lightning.

There was no time, not for the soldiers, not for Glen, and not for Lowen either.

*Crack Ka-Boom*

The Mantha had whipped its tail horizontally and 4 buildings had exploded forward toward at least a hundred soldiers and Lowen. The buildings, rocks, and debris, flesh and blood, all rained down from the sky. The screams of horror that followed were something akin to the most hellish of nightmares. The snake, if it had human features, would clearly be smiling at this moment, in pure delight.

The dust had risen and the dust had fallen, what was left before Tolm's eyes was absolute devastation. Body after body lay before him, twisted up in the most gruesome of ways. missing pieces, bone, blood, viscera. That wasn't the worse of it though. He could hear them, Tolm could hear the screams of many survivors that had been buried alive beneath the rubble. They were there, still suffering below in darkness.
