Chapter 4: Fatal encounter in the woods
After plucking the fruits Ed decides to climb down when something catches his eyes. Since his marrow cleansing he was able to feel Mana to a extent, what caught his attention was the a dense cloud of Mana. The possible explainations were
1. A human professional is having a break through(not possible because it is out in the wilderness)
2.A magical beast is having a break through(ruled out as he would already be caught and eaten)
3. He was hallucinating after eating the fruit(maybe)
4.A spiritual herb's flower is going to bloom( high possibility)
The possibility of finding a rare herb thrilled Ed. He decided to quickly get down and explore further. You see Ed , even though he was mentally very mature he hadn't faced any difficulties in his present and previous life so as soon as he saw the possibility of obtaining a herb , he forgot to survey the surrounding for dangers. As he was climbing down grunting sounds could be heard he then snapped back to reality to find a wild boar to have crept near his party. Wild boars are extremely territorial and are strong , even predators tend to get injured while fighting them.
The boar had just crawled out of his burrow only to find a bunch of small two legged creatures stealing its fruits. It was infuriated and decided to kill the nasty creatures, so it charged.
Ed who saw this had his brain frozen due to fear. It was the first time he felt danger. The 5 children down were also panicking but fortunately their leader Rose was quick to recover and she shouted to the party to run in different directions without looking back and stood there to draw the attention of the boar to herself. She loved her friends and wouldn't let anyone harm them, as she steeled herself for the forth coming pain she closed her eyes shut. But the pain never came. She opened her eyes to find the boar laying on the forest floor twitching, its tusk inches away from her. She saw Ed smiling as he was standing on the boar, but before she could make clear of the situation she saw Ed fainting.
Ed was clinging to the tree in fear and shock but Roses shout had brought him back to reality and he made a split second decision he jumped of the tree to perform a dropkick on the boar. It all happened in a second, due to the height from which he fell and the momentum of the boar itself the dropkick that landed on the boar had snaped its spinal cord and it died twitching. Ed who was pumped with adrenaline had a victory smile as he had saved Rose. But his smile froze as a blinding pain struck him , the pain was due to him twisting his ankle and as the adrenaline wore of the pain was so severe that he fainted on the spot. After all he was just a 5 year old kid.
It was after some time that Ed came about, when he opened his eyes he saw that he was lying on the ground under a familiar thatched hut , it was his house.
Seeing him wake up his mother who had been worried sick had started to cry , scold and hug her child.Ed didn't understand what was going on and asked his mother what had happened. She said
" After you fainted Rose and the children carried you here, they told me what had happened. I called the local apothecary to treat you , you had a severe fever and it only broke only after a day, you have been unconscious for 2 days."
"Why would you go deeper into the woods . If i had known this would happen i would have never let you leave...sob .....sob"
Seeing his mother cry he could only comfort her . He could not promise to stay away from the woods because he knew that the forest contained valuable herbs.
But Ed realized one thing, that he urgently needed to raise his strength and obtain the herb he saw . He knew that once the flower blooms it would surely be eaten by a wild animal. He also knew that he would have to fight to death for obtaining the herb.
As Ed was thinking of a way to obtain strength , his mother had stopped crying and brought out a parcel covered in cloth. She gave it Ed. When Ed opened it he found a beast core within it , he was shocked , never would he have imagined that his mother would actually buy him a beast core.
Ed asked his mother" Mommy how much is this beast core"
Jenn replied " Don't worry about it just practice with the core and let me worry about the cost"
Ed asked " Did we borrow the money for it"
jenn had a complicated look and finally said" No son , i sold my wedding ring, but don't worry about it and just focus on training after you are fully healed."
Ed was shocked, he knew that the only valuable thing in this house was that ring and his mother loved that ring as it was given to her by Edgar.
He was extremely moved and vowed that he would buy it back at all costs.
