Chapter 4: Naiads on the Pier

Nel ran up to cabin 11 with a wide grin on his face. Out of all the cabins, eleven looked the most like a regular old summer camp cabin. The threshold was worn down, the brown paint peeling. Over the doorway was one of a caduceus. No flashy gold walls or horrible bloody decoration. Just a staff with wings and snakes.

At the front of the door stood Annabeth with a book in her hand. At the sound of Nel approaching, she lifted her head up and frowned. "Why are you so happy? You look like a fool."

"I'm happy because something good happened to me Ms. Plan it All. Isn't it obvious?"

"I'm guessing your extortion of Apollo cabin was successful?"

"Very. I get a weekly batch of high quality arrows for the entire year. And they won't be able to fool me this time. Their air conditioner is malfunctioning again."

"Can't they just go over to the Hephaestus cabin and ask them to fix it?"

"I bribed the Hephaestus cabin to not help them."

".... with what?"

"I'm going to be on their side during the next capture the flag."

"But Hephaestus will be on Ares's side."

"Yep, and I'll be fighting you. Good luck."

Before Annabeth could curse at him in Greek, Chiron arrived with Percy in stow.

"Annabeth," Chiron said, "I have masters' archery class at noon. Would you take Percy from here?"

".... Yes, sir."

"Cabin eleven," Chiron told me, gesturing toward the doorway. "Make yourself at home. And good luck, Percy. I'll see you at dinner."

Nel waited for Chiron to disappear before giving a pat on Percy's back. "Excited to see your new summer home?"

"Uhhh-"

"Well?" Annabeth prompted. "Go on."

Percy stepped into the door and tripped, causing laughter to break out within the cabin.

"Percy Jackson, meet cabin eleven," Annabeth announced.

"Take good care of him. No bullying ok? Imma head out first. See you later Ms. Plan it All."

"Get out of here already Frosty head."

Nel let out a snicker before heading off towards his cabin, Cabin 8. It looks like a regular cabin except for the fact that it was decorated with the paintings and carvings of wild animals, mostly stags.

Humming to himself a merry tune, Nel proceeded to grab a quiver of arrows, the faulty ones from before, and made his way to the pier.

When he arrived, he pulled on the cross shaped pendant and watched as it became a bronze longbow.

He calmly knocked the bow with the arrow and shot it over the sea. He continued this process until he heard a giggle next to him.

Nel stopped what he was doing and sent a big wide smile to his side.

"Hello ladies, how are you doing?"

There were two teenage girls floating aimlessly in the water. They wore blue jeans and shimmering green T-shirts, and their brown hair floated loose around their shoulders as minnows darted in and out. They smiled and waved at Nel before giggling once again.

Nel shrugged and continued to shoot arrows until he was out. He was about to leave when one of the girls grabbed his feet. Raising an eyebrow, Nel bent down until his face was close to theirs.

The girls had mischievous eyes as they outstretched their hands revealing all the arrows that Nel had shot into the ocean.

Confused, Nel was about to take them out of her hands when the other girl grabbed Nel's arm and dragged him into the water.

Nel's head broke the surface of the water after a moment and gave the two girls, who were giggling, a wronged look.

"Was that really necessary?"

"No littering into the sea Nel, that's a bad boy thing."

"And bad boys should be punished."

Nel let out a sigh and tried to walk back into the land when the girls dragged him back into the water. Nel let out a sigh as the two girls started dragging him around in the water.

"When will you two let me go?"

"When we feel like it."

"For now, just go with the flow."

Nel gave the two girls a wry grin and decided to accept his fate. He should have known better than to throw the arrows away. He could always give them to Hephaestus cabin to recycle.

"And that is why, Percy, you should stay away from Naiads. They are terrible flirts."

Nel looked up to the bank and saw that Annabeth and Percy were standing there watching him. He let out a smile and waved.

"Heya Perce, hey Ms. Know it All. Wanna come in the water? It's pretty nice!"

Annabeth promptly ignored his offer and turned around to advise Percy once more. "Don't encourage the Naiads like Nel does."

"Relax Annabeth, have some fun for a change."

"I'll have fun when I pulverize you and Clarisse during capture the flag this Friday."

"Good luck then. I'll be sure to make that scenario remain a dream."

"Hope you get hypothermia frosty head."

Nel watched the two of them leave and gave the Naiads a grin. "Can't wait to beat her. This friday is going to be fun."

One of the Naiads poked him in the cheek as the other played with his hair.

"The boy with that girl.... he seemed to be familiar." Said a naiad with a finger on her lip.

"He seemed familiar to me too, how weird is that?"

Nel scoffed, "you talking about Perce? There is no way you know him. He just got here."

The Naiads tilted her head sideways to further express her confusion. "I know that I've never seen him before, but something about him seems familiar."

"He reminds me of him. You know, the old man with the beard."

Nel frowned, "are you talking about the lord of the sea?"

"Exactly! The boy reminds me of him. Strange."

Nel furrowed his brows and started to think.

"I should keep an eye out on Percy. He just turn out to be something special."
