Chapter 8: Space

I was out of the planets gravity field in seconds, by the time I pulled back, I was already in open space. "Display the coordinates on the screen." A blinking yellow arrow appeared on the bridge window pointing towards the vector, I aligned the ship, flicked some switches, after that, I looked at the planet a little closer. "What did you guys want with this planet anyway?" I said curiously.

"It was a venture by the UHF to get a colony on the outer reaches of the solar system, so they could claim any rare resources they found. Apparently, the RUP wasn't very fond of the idea."

I frowned in confusion, "Why hasn't anyone sent any more expeditions or investigate what happened?"

"I imagine they know something went wrong by know, but both sides are too committed to the war effort to investigate what happened to the expedition."

I thought on this information then spoke aloud, "Then how did they do it while being focused on the war effort?"

"A third party provided all the ships and equipment, all they did was collaborate with the UHF and let them know of their plans. After a little deliberation with the hirer ups the expedition ended up trading a percentage of any resources, they found in the system, and the got the protection of the UHF and were provided with an escort to make sure the expedition went well."

"So who owns the planet now?"

"Considering that all of them came on the expedition and they all died, as the last surviving ship, the Captain would usually take ownership, to put it simply, you own this planet." My mouth dropped in surprise.

"I OWN THIS PLANET?!!"

"Yes, as the last surviving Captain of the expedition your entitled to it, and even if they didn't want to accept that, we could propose that you were a survivor of the Colony ship Vanguard."

"Wait. What about those escape pods? Didn't they make it out of the battle?" She was silent for a moment, then spoke.

"They never made it, and even if they did, there was never enough food and fuel in those escape pods to last. They all died, Sam." She sounded sad, which was strange for an A.I but I decided not to ask.

"Why didn't you tell Captain Yale?"

"I didn't want to burden his heart more than it was already suffering, The man just had his dreams and family taken away from him and his friends killed. I couldn't bring myself to tell him that his crew had died too."

Well... wow, okay, I guess I own a planet. I looked back at the vector a flicked the last switch. A whirring sound could be heard as the stars flew towards me in a forever flowing river. It looked similar to the one that brought me here but, unlike mine, I couldn't see through the tunnel.

Now, what am I going to do for three days? I could get a couple more systems online. I walked up to the central console in the middle of the Bridge, turned it on and did a diagnostic test. As I did so my accessory which I now call a ValComm, blinked.

I guess it had been a while since I looked at my stats, I lifted my wrist and brought the screen to my view.

Not bad, but it could be better. Now, what does it want? I tapped on the blinking icon on the screen.

----------

[Congratulations!]

[You have taken ownership of an M-Class planet, would you like to proceed to the naming screen?]

(YES) (NO)

----------

I guess even the system acknowledges my ownership. Selecting '(YES)' I proceed to type in the planet's name, from the moment I sat down in this chair I knew what I wanted to name it.

----------

[Congratulations and rejoice for planet Yale!]

+5,000 experience

----------

"Thank you, Sam. I positive that his family and the UHF would approve."

I smiled, "No need, that man deserves it, besides, it kind of sounds cool. Right?"

"...." I frowned when Amy didn't respond, but I wasn't discouraged. I closed the screens and looked back at the console.

Looking at the list, I signed, "At least I'll have something to do on the way there." I grabbed my tools and walked out of the Bridge.
