Chapter 34: Read, Learn, Create.

3 hours later…

Lucas, after coming home, went directly to his underground lab and started harvesting books that were delivered.

But even after harvesting, he had to read each book at least once to memorize and learn it conceptually. All the books were technical and science-related. After reading the basic books, Lucas would then try to implement his knowledge by creating basic gadgets and messing around with the lights in the room, various instruments, etc.

His hunger to learn was ever-increasing. The more he read, the more interested he became. Piles of small gadgets were getting created in the lab, and at the same time, the lab was becoming more cluttered, with wires and broken parts lying around.

As time passed, Williams became more afraid to enter the lab as he started to experience terrifying noises like robotic voices, gunshots, and even explosions. But as if that wasn't enough, there would also be chemicals splashed on the floors and colorful gases coming out of test tubes. Williams advised Lucas to take breaks many times, but he didn't listen at all.

Eventually, Williams could only come from time to time to deliver food and give important messages.

Lucas didn't plan to continue the learning process for so long but couldn't help his thirst for knowledge. Every time he learned something new, he became more and more curious.

He focused on all mainstream topics in research and engineering: thermodynamics, electronics, mechanics... the list went on and on.

Lucas's creations started to become more and more complex as time passed by…

A month later…

A rat came out of a hole from somewhere and started licking a transparent liquid that had spilled all over the floor…

Slurp... slurp…

Eeeh!

It fell down with wide-open eyes!

Dead, most probably, but that wasn't the only weird thing in the lab…

The lab was a total mess, with thousands of books lying around, small robots crawling on the ground, strange machines making noises, gases bubbling over colorful liquids in test tubes, cracks in walls, and loose light wires hanging from the ceiling.

But as if apathetic to all this, a man wearing a dirty white lab coat was sitting on a chair with a machine to his right throwing nuts into his mouth from time to time, and another one in front of him holding a book and an electronic screen that moved corresponding to the movements of the man's eyes and neck.

Both of his hands were busy typing something on a keyboard at an astonishing speed, but his eyes were focused on the book. In layman's terms, he was multitasking.

'That man' was none other than Lucas, but he was nowhere near looking as cool as before. His once sharp eyes now had bags under them, his clothes were all messed up and reeking of food and alcohol. He had also developed a goatee on his face.

Lucas was reading the last book from his collection right now.

Many things had happened during the month. He had become famous for a while in Yin-Yang's underworld, given his performance in the mission at Planet Alios. His ruthless way of killing all the other contestant assassins had particularly attracted attention towards him. But the fame started dying out, and people started to think he was hiding due to fear of revenge from the surviving assassins and their brethren.

Nonetheless, he had received D-rank authorization from the Dark Guild due to this mission's completion.

Max had also informed him about many activities going on around Planet Alios. He was a little disheartened after knowing Lucas would not be taking action anytime soon but still worked diligently, given the good payment he was receiving.

As for Shiv, Lucas did receive some detailed information from him from time to time and was quite impressed by Shiv's work as well as the Velvet Organization.

A month's time was not particularly long in this era, as even the average population was around 100+ years. To big corporations like Velvet, this was even more true.

Lucas had fallen in love with science, so he couldn't help but become engrossed in learning as much as he could. But unlike what Williams thought—that his master had lost his mind in research—Lucas's reason for locking himself up was to keep a low profile and cut all his connections with the underworld.

Lucas was going to maintain a holy and positive persona on the surface, carving out the image of a perfect noble while doing all the dark work under his alias.

Also, there should be a gap between Lucas severing his connection from the underworld and the launch of his alias so that no one would suspect him. That's why he went underground for a month.

Not only that, but learning these new concepts would enable him to go solo to face all his opponents. If not, he would have to rely on others for the latest tech to arm himself.

With the harvest skill at his side, Lucas knew he had no reason to give this job to anyone else. But after he started learning scientific concepts, he couldn't help but start imagining developing some heaven-defying objects that would create havoc in the world.
