Chapter 3: Are You Okay?

Swiftly turning around and trying to shush him, David laughs and pulls up a seat beside me.

"Was yesterday that fun?" He jokingly asks.

"Ugh. Don't even ask." I suddenly sneeze and he scoots as far as possible away from me.

"You are awesome, but don't spread your germs to me." He laughs as he finds a tissue from my drawer and hands it to me.

"Thanks." I tear off a couple rolls and hold them against my stuffy nose.

"I think you're getting pretty sick. Maybe you should take the day off." He says, looking at me like a pitiable dog.

"Don't worry, I'll be fine." I assure him.

I have always been the type to power through illness. My mom always claimed that I behaved like admitting I was sick meant that I was saying I was weak and a loser.

Ugh that word just reminded me of someone I was trying to ignore.

I try to shoo David off. "I gotta edit fifteen more chapters for Tammy, maybe I'll head back when I'm done."

Not believing me, he nods, taps the back of my chair and walks away.

Even I don't trust my own words as I always edit around 50 chapters every day before I can release myself.

Settling in once again with my blocked nose, itchy throat, and 35 chapters to go, I hug my tissues closer to me.

My illness slows me down and I don't get done until 6:30pm when most people have left.

Sluggishly turning off my computer and tidying up, my grumbling stomach reminds me that I did not even eat lunch.

A smile comes to my lips as I notice a sandwich with a note clearly in David's handwriting by the side of my table.

It says, "Eat this, take medicine, and go home you stubborn cat!"

Not finding the medicine with it, I pick up the sandwich into my bag and groggy walk myself to the elevator to get to the car park.

Entering it, I lean by the side of the elevator as I seem to go in and out of my consciousness.

I press the button for the basement floor, but for some reason a number for the top floor, 13, shows and the elevator starts moving up. Giving up, I let the machine take its course.

A tall man in a dark suit stands outside as the elevator opens at the top.

At this point, I have no energy left to be surprised.

He takes on my haggard appearance and walks in, moving to the other edge of the elevator.

He presses the button for the garage floor and I finally realize that I did not even press the button I thought I did.

As the elevator slowly reaches the basement, I try my best to hold in my sneezes, as my face contorts into an ugly frown, but he does not even glance my way.

On the floor just before the basement, I hear that cursed question again from the worst person to ask it.

A deep voice asks, "Are you okay?"

My consciousness slips as I slump to the ground.

Of course I'm not okay you idiot.
