Chapter 2: Dad's Gone

"Richard" Mom shouted, "it's supper time."

"Argh!" Groaned Richard, "I'm coming!"

Potatoes. That word makes me angry, just the thought alone makes my blood boil. Potato soup, potato pie, and even potato cake. That's all we've eaten for two whole weeks! It was fine at the beginning, great even but now just thinking about it makes me sick.

It was fathers idea to plant pumpkins this year. He came home with a dozen potatoes that he bought from the merchant and said he wanted something different.

"No more wheat. I'm planting potatoes this year."

And now we're in trouble. The elders came for father last night and he still hasn't come home yet.

"Mom?" I asked, "Will dad come home?"

"Eat," Mom replied, "Your father will be home soon. You don't need to worry. Now eat your food."

I don't understand why the rest of the villagers won't eat the potatoes. They say it's poisonous and will kill them if it's eaten. We ate it at home and we are fine but no one is willing to try any. They call us demons and nearly burned our house down yesterday. If it wasn't for mothers water affinity we would have been burned alive.

Mother refuses to talk about it. She says it doesn't matter anymore and it's too late for her, she's nothing special, not anymore.

I saw it with my own eyes. It rained inside the house and it rained up, towards the roof. Now I know magic is real and not just some bedtime story told to scare little kids.

Today, I decided I will become a mage. I don't want to be a farmer anymore...

"Mom" I shouted, "I want to become a magician like in the stories and save dad."

"What?!" Mom screamed, "You will become a farmer like your father. And besides, there is no such thing as magic."

"Now finish your supper" commanded mom, "And, go to sleep. You have a long day ahead of you tomorrow."

"But mom I don't want to become a farmer. It's hard work and the elders always take our food and give it to the mages. So, when I become a mage I can get food without becoming a farmer."

"No" mom sighed, "it's not so simple. Mages are responsible for the village safety and some are sent away from home and never return. Mummy is scared that if you become a mage she won't see you anymore."

"But... but I want to become a mage and eat good food!" Richard replied, "Tomorrow I'm going to the test maybe I really can be chosen."

"That's enough it's time for bed. You have a long day tomorrow."

"Yes mom" I groaned, dragging my feet upstairs I looked over my shoulders and asked, "Mom! Could you tell me a story, please?"

"Please mom! I love your stories."

"Alright, Richard," Mothe sighed, "but only once you are ready for bed."

"Yay! Thanks mom!"

Rushing to my room I quickly discard my everyday clothing and change into my bed clothes. I get under my blanket and call out to mom.

"Mom, I'm ready."

"Ok. Ok, I'm coming," mom replies, "What kind of story would you like to hear tonight, Richard?"

"I want to hear how the stars came into being and why there are so many of them."

"Well Richard you see, a long time ago in an era many before ours..."

At the beginning of time, the Sun and the Moon were alone in the skies. They stood vigil over empty worlds watching them spin round and round. New worlds were created and old worlds died, lying in the vast emptiness of space for eternity waiting for the sun and the moon to start their cycle once more.

The Sun was in charge of birthing new life into the dead worlds and the Moon watched over the worlds, teaching and guiding the worlds once more.

Over time life was born into the world. Some worlds learned how to make clouds and water, some ground and some life. But, as time always tells these worlds eventually died. Seeing this, the Moon salvaged what it could from the dead worlds and passed it on to each new world for millions and millions of years. Until eventually one world born out of this cycle and finally created the first intelligent life.

And in this world, the first human was born out of the earth with the breath of the world. These humans knew all that was before and what the fate they and the world will be. Fearing their fate the humans created fire, copying the sun's flame and refined themselves and the world for countless years.

The Sun seeing mere humans use its fire to stop the cycle and prevent them and their world from being reborn was enraged. Using its own flame the Sun refined the world with all its inhabitants until they died then once again the world was reborn once more.

The Moon fearing that the Sun would not let any other world's birth life split a part of itself into countless pieces and spread far and wide into the universe. These stars to this day have guided worlds and the people living on them through their lives.

"And that Richard is how the stars were created long, long ago."
