Chapter 1: Reality or dream

Floating between life and death, Xinyu felt herself slipping into darkness. Soon enough, she felt a change of scenery, the commotion of an accident changed to a quiet courtyard in a historical Chinese setting.

The night was cold and windy, the wind howled sorrowfully. It was a dark knight, the fog clouding the sky. In the old courtyard, everything seemed dead as hadn't been tended to or looked after for a rather long time. The courtyard was on top of a hill and was isolated from everything else. Looking down at the big hallway, she could hear wails of a newborn baby. Coming closer, she saw a little baby girl wrapped in some rough fabric.

The baby's mother was lying beside her, motionless. She seemed to have breathed her last time breath. After a long while, the baby stopped wailing probably of tiredness. Because she had cried for a long time, it was hard to stop abruptly, thus she was hulking sadly. Not long after, heavy steps came towards from the west wing, an old lady weakly hurried inside. Seeing the scene in front of her, she bit down her tears and slowly pulled herself to the corpse. "Madam, Our Madam, you have suffered injustice." She whispered sorrowfully. "Wake up, wake up, Madam, what will be of the young princess if you were gone." The old lady was covered in bloodstained bruises, seemingly suffered quite some beatings before she arrived.

Again, it was this dream again. The scene happening before her eyes was something she was familiar with as she had dreamt this exact same dream many times before. Every time she woke up from this particular dream, her heart is filled with sadness and sentiment of the ones alive griefing over the dead. As always, she was only a spectator, and could only watch as everything unfold but it always ended up affecting her mood. The old lady would grief over her Master for a long time before comforting the baby, lullabying her to sleep.

Eventually, this was usually time Xinyu would wake up. This time, however, the scenery switched for a second time. Endless rows of peach blossoms came into her sight, not only that, on the ground stood countless of other flowers ⎼ daffodils, lavenders, roses of many different colours, carnations, sunflowers ⎼ there were too many to name and some she didn't even know what is. This place seemed to be a flower paradise, filled with flowers of every kind and species. The flower gave off a pleasant smell, letting her feel at ease.

In this dream, Xinyu determined she must be a part of it as she felt her body move on its own. Her body walked to a cottage and sat down on a chair by the stone table in the pavilion. She elegantly poured herself a cup a jasmine tea and slowly sipped on it, letting the smell enhance the flavour. She turned around slowly as she heard footsteps running towards her. A cute baby boy, about 3 to 4 years old, in Chinese traditional clothing, appeared. "Jiejie! Jiejie, how was it? Did you brought something back for Ah-Huang." He said excitedly. Xinyu was startled inside, being talked to but her body moved by itself, and out of her hand, a box appeared. Looking at her own hand, she was just as astonished as the child.

"I know Jiejie won't forget Ah-Huang." He gave her a bright smile and received the gift. He opened it and found a paper lantern and a mooncake. Examing the items, he turned to Yin Yu and asked. "JieJie, what's this?" She couldn't hear what she said but the boy became fascinated again. He took a bite of the mooncake and smiled satisfying by the taste. "It's delicious, JieJie." Her hand moved to pat his head dotingly. He finished the cake rather quickly and started talking again. "Jiejie, will you leave again? ... How long this time? ... You must bring something good for Ah-Huang, alright..." His words became blurred and the images shifted once again.

She stood in front of a portal ready to cross, her surroundings were quiet. She seemed to be waiting for something or someone. An old lady appeared and offered her a cup of tea. She looked at for a while, hesitating. "My princess ..." The old lady wanted to say something, the worry was apparent on her face yet she couldn't utter a word when she looked at Xinyu. She seemed to have said something, making the old lady shed tears in respond. The old lady then stepped back and gave her a grand bow which Xinyu couldn't bear to see and helped her up.

"Your old servant will await your return." She looked at the old lady, then turned to the portal, wondering where it would lead her. Right now inside was only darkness. She looked at the tea the old lady offered and gave it tiny sips before drinking up everything. Moving forward towards the portal, she stepped inside.

"YU'ER!" She could hear a voice calling right after she had gone through. Turning back she saw a figure running towards her way, but it was too late, she had started to disappear. It wasn't painful or dreadful, she somehow felt at peace. But the voice calling was full of unwillingness and sorrow and was oddly familiar. But the portal was sucking her inside, she closed her eyes and accepted her fate.
