Chapter 57: Managing My Own Life(4)
I stayed at my uncle's house for two more days before going down to South City for work.
When I arrived at Cong. Wang's house, my two childhood friends who were helpers in the house greeted me cheerfully. I wondered what's the good news. After I put down my bag and went to take shower, Percy joined me in the living room. He gave me a box. By this time, cellphones are already out and started to get into the hands of common people.
"Boss, what's this?" I asked as I looked at the box on the coffee table.
"Gift for you, bonus from big boss for a job well done. plus...." Boss Percy said enthusiastically.
"Bonus...plus?" I was excited.
"You'll be taking over my position as a manager. !" He said.
"What? Don't kid me boss!" I said in disbelief.
"You will manage this branch, I'll go up to the main." He said crossing his hands over his chest.
"You know that this is not my area of learning. I will find a job back home once the result of my exam is out. That is hoping I will pass." I protested.
"It's just the same, working to earn money. What's the difference?" He said nonchalantly.
"I know. But that's too much an expectation of me. By the way thank you for this phone. Who wants to be my textmate?" I said as I laughed and opened the box. It was the latest model of Nokia. The girls looked at me with envy but their smiles were happy nevertheless.
"It's a package deal. You get that and get the managerial position as well. It's fixed price." Percy said.
"So how do you suppose to manage the main branch when you cannot even control this branch? Or are you applying as a vice-congressman?" I laughed. Whatever that vice-congressman meant.
"My wife needs me, she is pregnant and our daughter goes to school too. I can work from home doing the payroll, insurances and liaise necessary issues. If you decide to quit afterwards, I can come back to take over after my wife is settled. I will need a helper to take care of things while I'm away." Percy explained.
"Ah, I see. That's reasonable enough. But I worry I might not handle this job well. What if I can't control things....and your company goes bankrupt?" I said.
"With your record breaking savings, there's no doubt you can handle things well. Im just a call away if you need me for something. That's why you have that." Percy pointed at the phone on my hand.
" Please find me also a textmate. It will be boring having a cellphone without someone to talk to." I grinned.
"Don't worry, I have already entered my number there, and some of the boys in the office. Your turn to order them around boss Fem." Percy said.
"Okay boss. Your wish is my command! But how much will I earn a month?" I remembered about salary.
" Name your price, but don't exceed five digits." He answered.
I went speechless. Five digits? So I can actually claim five digits salary! Like seriously? That would be 99,000 bucks to the max! A regular employee earns about 10,000-15,000 bucks per month. Is he serious? For a first time worker, this salary is quite much. But given that they offered this to me, I wouldn't refuse it. I just needed to take responsibility seriously.
"Hmmmm...do you mean 99, 999 crisp bucks? I eyed at boss Percy to see if he really meant what he said.
"Haha, you are so smart boss Fem! You deserve that. In fact, that can be higher if you plan to stay longer." He said without much care.
"Hohoooo!!! Someone's bribing me with so much money! Okay, bring them all under. I won't refuse, Haha! " I said happily.
"No, that's enough for now. Otherwise you will get rich quickly and you'll scare men away. Unless you want to grow an old maid." Percy said.
"Don't you worry about that boss! I buy myself a boyfriend from the military. I heard they are not earning much, but they look good aren't they?" I said. Everyone laughed. Deep inside, I remembered Mark. What could he be doing this time and where is he destined now? I wonder. 'Maybe he is also tending to his pregnant wife.' That thought sent me bitter again.
