Chapter 68: His Life Without Her (11)

"Who led you here? Why did you not atleast inform us that you are coming?" Mr. Law stood as still as he alternately stared the two of us.

"We came by ourselves Uncle. We just happened to meet a young boy along the way who showed us here." I replied with a faint smile calling him uncle shamelessly. Perhaps I wanted to see how he reacts with the way I address him.

"Please sit down first while I prepare your coffee. Are you guys drinking coffee?." Mrs. Law gestured as she brought out two monoblocks and placed them in front of the bench where we sat earlier. Mrs. Law looks accommodating and kind. She looks like she's in her mid 50's. Her skin was fair and unlikely of a farmer.

"Thank you Aunty, Yeah, I like brewed coffee please." I smiled at Mrs. Law as I sat down infront of Mr. Law, separated by a small wooden center table. He sat down erect with his back not touching the back rest.

"Yeah, brewed coffee is great! Thanks Aunty!" Dan followed.

" And why this time? Why did you not come earlier" Mr. Law asked straight but with a low deep voice.

"I came straight from the South City where I was destined. I took the chance to come and talk about our plan before. I'm so sorry I didn't find the chance earlier. My transfer was right before the graduation of your daughter and I was not allowed to take leave. I still hope my chance with your daughter remains." I answered sincerely without really thinking about how they might be thinking about me. Did their daughter tell them about Agnes' issue with me? I just didn't take that into consideration when I spoke. Or is it the reason why he is so aloof now?

"That's actually my problem. I don't know if my daughter is still available for anyone. She went lost after her graduation. She didn't even show up to celebrate her graduation!" Mr. Law said with a steady deep voice.

"Prior to her graduation, did she tell you anything about me?" I asked nervously.

"What do you mean? Have you been contacting her after our meeting before?" He swallowed long and knitted his brows.

"Not really sir, I only wrote her once and then I got tranferred to the Central City so I never got the chance to see her. I was just thinking, if she mentioned anything about me to you." I wanted to clarify if they know something about my issue with Agnes. I didn't want to bring it out unless they'll be the once to ask me about it. I will find a way to explain everything to her when we meet. It lessens the burden if they know nothing about it.

"Please help yourselves with these. I need to check the garden first." Mrs. Law placed a tray of four mugs steaming with delicious coffee and some steamed sweet potatoes on the wooden center table.

Mr. Law nodded to his wife then continued, "That daughter of mine doesn't talk much at home. I didn't even know you knew each other. She never mentioned anything about you. That makes me think that she is just fooling with men." Mr. Law took off his eyeglasses, lightly scratched his lower eyelid then continued...

" I don't know where she is now. She doesn't know anything about out plan. Although she tried to ask who's making all those developments along the way, I didn't tell her anything. I thought it was not yet time." Mr. Law said with downcasted face.

"Don't you think Fem and your nephew are together uncle?" I tried to fish out his reaction.

"I don't think so. My nephew has a full respect on me. He will never do that. That's why I never tried to prevent him when he came to ask me for his cousin. If you didn't appear in the picture, I wouldn't let my daughter fall on any other man's arms but him." Mr. Law answered. His answer left me lose some of my confidence. He is sure doting on his nephew. I took a mug of coffee and passed it to Dan.

" Stanley is a brigh good man. I have nothing against him. I know he loves my daughter and can provide for her. He must be busy looking for a part-time job in the city now. I don't know if he knows where she is. Some neighbors told me they have seen my daughter with some campaigners roaming around the province. She must have joined those campaign volunteers." Mr. Law said as he held his mug of coffee in his hand. He then drunk his coffee faster than us while I was caught in my thought. Why does he praise his nephew in my face. Does this mean he is rejecting me for his daughter?

"Anyway, take your coffee first. Those old horses need some grass. I'll leave you here first. We will talk more after I come back. You are not in a hurry to go back, are you?" Mr. Law asked.

"Not really, but we need to go back tomorrow for the election. We will be much honored to spend the night here." I said in delight as I watched him change his shoes into a working rubber boots.
