Chapter 5: An Oath He Swore

In the dim B3 level of the Omotesandō Station, a fire was built. The meat of a deer and a bear were being cooked above the fire, speared with a few simple and sturdy wooden rods that the God of Freedom had procured. The vampires and humans had gathered around the fire, all looking at the God of Freedom for his instructions.

Although the charm that the God of Freedom had placed on them had faded, the two races had discussed amongst their own kind and decided that they would follow his instructions.

"Look here." The God of Freedom pouted. "I did say I will help you build a community strong enough to not be controlled by either the Japanese Imperial Demon Army and the vampire society, but I did not say I will become your leader."

The black-haired vampire looked at him, his mouth pressed into a thin line. "What do you suggest we do then? If you truly wish us to unite, you are the only option to achieving that end. We, vampires, will not accept someone inferior to lead us and if us vampires were to lead, there would be no change to the status quo." The vampire rested a hand over his raised knee. "It was your idea to start a revolution so you should take responsibility for it."

The most outspoken human amongst the bunch—the woman who first raised her voice—glanced at the vampire who had spoken. She then looked at the God of Freedom. "…We had discussed among ourselves—among us humans anyways—and we'd like you to be our leader." She averted her eyes and mumbled, "Besides the fact that you're strong, you're a human too so at least you wouldn't treat us like livestocks."

The vampires sneered upon hearing her mumbling. One of them spoke, "Of course the humans picked based on such shallow reasons."

The woman glared at the brown-haired female vampire that had insulted them. "It's not like you guys are any different!"

The vampire harrumphed as she didn't deign to give the woman a reply.

The God of Freedom hummed as he rotated the sizzling meat. He never had subordinates or apostles like the other gods, but it didn't hurt for him to try his hand at leadership. He stopped rotating the meat and clapped. "Alright, since I'm your leader now, here is my first order." His gaze took in the twenty-four humans and six vampires, the two races' serious faces sent amusement into the god's heart. "Suggest a name for me to use."

Silence reigned over the whole room.

A moment passed before the human woman asked, "A name…?"

"Yep, a name. Not a moniker, not a title. A name is what I want you to give me." The God of Freedom inspected the meat as he rotated them again. Was the meat cooked yet?

The black-haired vampire narrowed his eyes. "Are you planning to be dishonest with us? While I am satisfied to not know of your motive for helping us yet, a revolution led by one who wouldn't even divulge their true name to their followers is doomed to fail."

The God of Freedom stared at the meat as he propped his chin up with the palm of his hand. "Do you doubt my love for all of you?" He heard a scoff coming from the vampires' side. "Seriously, is there no trust left in this wretched world?"

He let out a long and loud sigh. "You know, back where I came from, I was referred to as the God of Freedom. My surroundings are like, "Hey, God of Freedom! Check out my music!" or "I have amassed quite the delicacies here so why don't you fancy a meal together with me, dear God of Freedom?"" His voice switched from upbeat to deep as he imitated his fellow god friends. Manifesting his sword to stab the meat in front of him, he sighed once again. "It's annoying."

The humans murmured and the vampires fixated the God of Freedom with flat stares.

The God of Freedom thought of the various names his friends were given; he never did use any of their given names to refer to them. If he didn't get to have a name, the least he could do was pretend the surrounding gods also didn't have any name.

He pulled out his sword embedded in the meat only to plunge it back in. Oil fat and juices dripped down and the fire crackled. "I mean, I know I don't have a temple and therefore no worshippers but that doesn't mean I deserve to be nameless."

"Are you trying to start a revolution or a cult?" The black-haired vampire's eye twitched. "Human, when you came barging in here with headless animals as so-called gifts, I thought you were foolish. However, since you have the strength and charisma to start to back up your words, I'm willing to follow you." He growled. "Alas, if you continue with your nonsense, you might find yourself the one skewered to be roasted over the flames instead of those animal meat."

Waving his hand, the God of Freedom chuckled. "That was a good joke, Vampire-san. We all know you'd only die trying." Ignoring the frustrated growl coming from said vampire, he turned his eyes from the meat to the mortals. "Just give me a name. I can't introduce myself properly to the leaders of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army and to whoever rules the vampire society here in Japan, right?"

"...Free," a voice mumbled. "I-I think the name 'Free' suits Mister."

The God of Freedom smiled and turned to look at the source of the suggestion. "Finally, I don't have to repeat myself again." He retracted his sword back and the weapon rested as a ring on his finger once more. "Why 'Free'? Is it because I am called the God of Freedom?" The boy nodded and the God of Freedom hummed. "Hmm, that's a rather simple name." He chuckled. "Well, since there aren't any other suggestions, I'll take it."

"Well then, introductions are in order." He stood up and smiled. "Freedom comes in many forms. In whatever world it may be, people always seek it. Therefore they bring change through a revolution in order to have the liberty they desire. I, am the God of Freedom. I, am Free." His eyes glowed in the darkness of the underground.

"And you shall be too."
