At Cai Mao's platform, when he heard that both Huo Jun and Lu Gon were captured by Guan Yu he was angered by the extreme, and in the moment of anger slapped Wang Can in the back of his head calling him all of this was caused by him, now there are no top generals at his disposal where this could be the end for them to lose this battle, and Wang Can who was mistreated time and time again began to resent Cai Mao heavily.
Even though he knew that some of this was his fault, Cai Mao also contributed largely to their situation. If only he just listened to him and not forced their army to march for a full day, maybe they could immediately attack Liu Bei's army whose preparation wasn't done yet.
Now not only he doesn't admit his mistakes but he also blames himself and others who tried to advise him to not do so, and even though his rank was below him Cai Mao doesn't treat him with the respect a leader should have for his subordinates.
Now he could see that Cai Mao was drunk with the power and position he had received and that everything that happened in Liu Biao's retreat from Xiangyang, Cai Mao must have been one of the catalysts for their defeat or he offended Liu Bei badly.
While Cai Mao was scolding Wang Can with all the curse words he knew, the situation on the battlefield for Liu Biao's Army turned against them after losing both Huo Jun and Lu Gong who coordinated the second assault under Wang Can's order.
Without the command of the two of them, Liu Biao's men were in a state of disarray and many were forced to enter the Eighth Gate Formation, this caused half of Liu Biao's army have enter a never ending formation maze.
Ju Shou and Kuai Yue seeing this organized the formation to begin grinding the enemy that had entered the formation, where their army was ordered to kill the ones who resisted and captured the one who surrendered.
The War Drum sounded and Liu Pan, Zhang Fei, and Guan Yu who had dropped off Huo Jun and Lu Gong hearing this beat, immediately led their unit to attack Liu Biao's men who were trapped with full scale attack.
Wang Can who was being scolded by Cai Mao see all of this happening before his eyes, and for the first time since the start of the expedition, he braves himself to fight back against Cai Mao, to save what remains of Liu Biao's Army.
Wang Can: "General Cai Mao! Please listen to me and be silent for a moment! Look at the situation of our army now! You should order a retreat!"
Cai Mao: "Watch your tone bastard! I know that the situation of our Army isn't good right now but it doesn't mean that we need to re- What?! How could this happen?! Wasn't the situation salvageable before why turned into this?!"
Wang Can: "It must be the effect from General Huo and Lu was captured by Guan Yu, our army is now leaderless in the front line without any high rank officer that could coordinate their attack! I suggest we retreat, General, we have lost around half of our Army!"
Cai Mao: "No! Why would we retreat?! There must be a way for us to turn this around! And we still need to save both Huo Jun and Lu Gong, the two of them are too valuable to be left behind!"
Wang Can: "Damnit General! If we don't retreat right now, Lord Liu Biao would lose an entire 100,000 men! Please don't think about your own power base!"
Hearing what Wang Can had just said, Cai Mao, feel like he was slapped in the face by Wang Can. Even though he was angered by it, he knew that time was of the essence so after calming himself down, Cai Mao ordered the retreat of his army.
The war drum beats of the retreat were sounded, and what was left of Liu Biao's Army hearing this sound immediately retreated, leaving their comrade who was trapped in the formation behind.
Kuai Yue and Ju Shou heard the war drum from Cai Mao's side and ordered that none of Liu Bei's men pursue Cai Mao and his army, and just focus on the remaining Liu Biao's soldiers that were trapped inside the formation.
Cai Mao on the other hand, after giving the order to retreat immediately gets down from his platform and rides his horse accompanied by his guard leaving Wang Can behind.
Wang Can just shook his head at Cai Mao's personality as he finally see that Cai Mao doesn't deserve to become a head general of an army, he is much better to become one of its generals or the head admiral of a navy.
Getting on his horse, Wang Can follow Cai Mao from behind, and after a couple of minutes the remaining Liu Biao's Army has regrouped, and under Cai Mao's lead, they begin to retreat from Jixan.
Cai Mao's retreat signaled the end of the Battle at Jixan, declaring Liu Bei's side as the winner and Liu Biao's side once again as the loser.
This news soon spread to the whole land, causing a large blow to Liu Biao's prestige where many of his retainers began to doubt him, especially the Governor of Changsha named Han Xuan.
As for the other Warlords, none give any reaction to the result of the battle. Only Cao Cao gave special attention to this side because he wanted to take back Xinye if there was any chance for him to act.
After the end of the Battle at Jixan, far from this location to the Northwest of Jixan, the internal struggle between Ma Teng and Han Sui for Chang'An entered its climax.
Ma Teng began his plan where he relied on his Han ethnicity to convince the people and officials of Chang'An that he was a much better ruler for Chang'An rather than Han Sui who had a different ethnicity and was an enemy in the past against the Han Dynasty.
When this happened, true to Ma Teng's previous prediction, Han Sui tried to undermine his plan by announcing that he was a traitor to Han as he allied himself with the Qiang People Han Sui included for his own ambition.
This caused both sides to finally sever their personal friendship with each other, Han Sui was the one who started this because he felt that Ma Teng broke the rules of the game when he used his ethnicity.
Ma Teng even though disheartened by the action of his friend, no former friend accepted the statement and so a full scale battle finally happened between Ma Teng and Han Sui's men in Chang'An.
Han Sui deployed his Eight Riders Generals consisting of Cheng Yi, Cheng Yin, Hou Xuan, Li Kan Liang Xing, Ma Wan, Yang Qiu, and Zhang Heng leading his cavalry unit to wreak havoc on Ma Teng's army bases in Chang'An.
Ma Teng receiving this news, immediately sent out all of the generals at his disposal including his eldest son Ma Chao and Pang De to counter against Han Sui's attack on his army bases.
Realizing that Han Sui has many more generals at his disposal than him, Ma Teng also set out personally to attack Han Sui's Army Camp located outside of Chang'An, where all of his famed generals weren't present.
Han Sui who was at the camp waiting for the good news from his generals, received the report that Ma Teng was heading out to attack the camp causing Han Sui to stand up from his chair, and ordered his soldiers to fortify the camp immediately.
After that, he also sent out letters to call back some of his Eight Riders Generals to assist him because all see this as a chance, where if he could defeat Ma Teng here then he could gain control of Chang'An
When Ma Teng finally arrived with his men, he saw Han Sui standing in front of his men and was ready for any attack from him.
Ma Teng: "Han Sui! Let's just end this dispute with you surrendering the control of Chang'An to me! You knew better than anyone else that it was much better for me to govern Chang'An!"
Han Sui: "Humph! Keep dreaming of Ma Teng! You knew it yourself that I would never surrender, especially since the prince was very lucrative which was control over Chang'An!"
Ma Teng: "Why can't you just agree?! You hold more towns than me in Liang Province, so Chang'An should have been mine since I have conceded control of many towns to you!"
Han Sui: "Chang'An and those towns are different! You can't compare them because Chang'An is the heart of the Han Dynasty previously and the center of trade and wealth!"
Ma Teng: "Your true purpose was finally revealed! All you care about is money and prestige! Fine since you don't want to surrender then could only do this the hard way!"
After Ma Teng said these words, he immediately ordered his army to enter an offensive formation and Han Sui saw this and also ordered his men to enter a defensive formation, while hoping that some of the Eight Riders Generals would arrive at any moment.
Unbeknownst to him, his Eight Riders Generals were currently blocked by Ma Chao and Pang De inside Chang'An, as all of Chang'An gate was closed and there was no way out for them.
Ma Teng led the attack on Han Sui and his men, and the moment their army came into contact a fierce battle ensued, due to both sides understanding each other well sides they had fought side by side for many years.
At first, no one managed to gain the upper hand but soon it could be seen that the favor tipped into Na Teng's side, due to Han Sui having fewer men at his disposal than Ma Teng because he sent his men with the Eight Riders Generals.
He never expected that this move would cause a massive backlash for him and when he wanted to order his men, he was suddenly attacked from the side but managed to parry it.
He turned to the side to see who attacked him and saw that it was Ma Teng, he was surprised at first but soon became solemn and without saying any word attacked Ma Teng using his glaive and Ma Teng received his attack with his spear, two traded blow after blow and slowly Ma Teng gained the upper hand over Han Sui as he was much better at martial arts and much stronger compared to Han Sui.
