Chapter 2: The Death Dance Maiden(Oneshot)

Kate was startled; she had never been in this kind of situation in her boring life. Her parents usually were always at work, leaving her stranded at home. Most of the time she usually sat around and played "Ark: Endurance Evolved" when she didn't have lacrosse practice. She was usually stuck in her suburban home in Baltimore with nothing else to do but battle it out online alone, because she was a loner. Sure, she had friends in the eleventh grade, but they were just superficial; they never understood her no matter how hard she tried explaining. Compared to her regular routine, this was a real life-threating adventure. Now she's crawling under force fields somewhere in the forest neighboring the Philadelphia Airport, and she has no respawn or restart button if she were suddenly ripped apart by a plasma gun. Life is a game she thought; but now this quote was not a meme anymore.

(T)Simultaneously, as she turned around, she was surprised that the deep voice actually came from a tiny fairy boy that was sitting on top of the dog, and not from Mr. Jacks.

"What? Never heard of voice imitation?" Said the fairy-boy cheekily.

She was baffled; she (T)previously heard about fairies, but she had never seen a real one. It was a rare sight to see one and even rarer to befriend one. This one was wearing clothes made of leaves that were engraved by enchantments and seals. "H-h-hi," she replied nervously. "How are you, how can I help you?"

"Not very well. No thanks to the dark elves for setting this up, but I don't see you in the best condition either," the little fairy replied as he twirled his finger, casting a little bit of magic, healing her wounds dealt by the force field.

"Thank you, little fairy."

"You're welcome. But the name's Faens," he said cheerfully with a grin. "Oh yeah, by the way, I felt the presence of an elven general who infiltrated the compound. He plans on killing everyone here by starving us to death, and our only way out is to challenge him to any kind of exciting battle. Apparently, he is nearby on the roof!! But first, what kind battle will you choose?"

"Hmmm… the only skills I have are playing lacrosse and dancing. Maybe I should choose dancing because I used to play 'Just Disco' on my 'X-Cube' for countless hours, and I passed all the levels with full stars and points."

"Ok?? Well, have it your way," he sighed, "but you must train with the ancient master of dance battles before you face the general. Tasogare yori mo kuraki mono!!" He shouted as a purple star in a purple circle appeared on the grass as smoke exploded out of it."

"Meow, who dares interrupt the meow sleep of the almighty one?" Called out an ancient looking white cat, purring angrily at them, emitting an unpleasant aura. It smelt like a barrel of overcooked herring.

The little fairy bowed down at the frumpy old cat calling out, "Junior meets Master Karin, master of masters, I humbly plead thou to help my friend for a special kind of upcoming battle, a dance match, a duel of death against an elven general."

"Alright, but in exchange, I want some of the mysterious cat nip that everyone talks about," he meowed. As he snapped his fingers, they were transported to mountain Myōboku were there were traditional Japanese buildings inhabited only by cats.

Their training was intense and their extreme efforts were accompanied by sweat, blood, meows and cat nip for a month, but the time in the mountain was the equivalent of one hour on Earth. She learnt everything from intermediate Bachata to Salsa to tap to break dancing and even some advanced Boogie Woogie.

"Young miss meow, you have completed your training, surpassing most meow masters. Beware of those who are more, meow, skilled than you. If you can't win the, meow, match, use the, meow, mask of the dancing devil; it will, meow, possess you until your opponent loses. Meow, it won't matter how used up your, meow, body is, but it will, meow, continue even if you die, unless you, meow, win." The mask was red and resembled a Japanese Oni (Devil), but it had cat features.

"Thank you master; I will humbly receive this gift and use it properly," she said, bowing down.

Ten minutes (T)later, she got ready and got back to her original spot.

"Well, looks like this is where we part, hehe," said the little elf. "Bye."

"Bye, let's see if I can survive and meet you again," she said as she slowly climbed up to the top of the airport hangar.

She started to climb the corroded cold steel ladder, (T)when suddenly she heard a booming vicious laughter.

(T)Finally, when she reached the top of the hangar, grunting, she shouted in elven with a strong human accent, "I challenge thou to a battle! May my life depend on it for an escape route for all humans here to pass safe and soundly from here, away from harm's way."

"Ha, ha, ha, you serious? You wanna die? You humans are sure puny," he roared arrogantly whilst laughing hysterically in full battle armor. It was created by the most precious materials that would even gleam in the darkness. The general had long golden locks, pointy ears, a curved nose, and a long-shaped face with a mocking expression. His stature was around two meters tall, and he was broad-shouldered with bulky muscles. "Well then, what kind of battle will thou choose?" Said the elf, crooking his eyebrow.

(T) For a few seconds, she thought about it and replied confidently, "Well then, how about a dance battle?"

"Fine then, the challenger shall begin!" He shouted as he pointed at Kate, smirking. "This is our tradition," he continued as Kate firmly stared at him and started to move around swift and steadily. (T)First, she started off with her basic choreography, which was made by blending basic and simple dance moves into a complete routine appropriate for beginner dancers. Due to the daily training her master gave her, she was completely unfazed when the lengthy dance finished. (T) Next, it was the elf's turn. He gracefully danced his traditional elven dance. Even the fireflies around them came to join him. This was due to the fact that elves are more connected to nature, unlike most humans.

She then used her breakdance and hip-hop skills, merging them into a rhythmically smooth dance. She released her strong battle aura, making a strong gust of wind, which knocked the elven master off his feet, defeating him instantly.

"Thou have defeated me young human girl. Honoring the elven code, I shall complete my side of the deal," the elven general said as he crushed an amulet, making it fade out of his hand as he too faded away from sight. His final word was whispered and carried by wind into Kate's ear. "Goodbye"

Weeks later at home…

"MOOOOM STOP BOTHERING ME!" Kate Screamed as she finished playing the new game she had recently bought. She had been grinding her dance levels until she reached LV:999, the max level in the game for any skill. She had become one of the top 10 gamers in the world ranking, earning her title as 'The Death Dance Maiden.' She had also become a half-time streamer.

Looking back, she realized that defeating the elven master was a small feat in this game.

From this entire virtual experience, she received countless treasures from hidden quests, such as saving her lacrosse team and freeing the fairy prince. This made her realized there is a meaning to life.
