Chapter 3: The announcement
Usually, I will stay put while everyone else leaves for lunch but for the first time I was the first person to leave for the cafeteria. Maybe because of the hunger I felt for skipping breakfast or the pressure I felt from the way my classmates kept glaring at me or probably both. I just knew I couldn't stay a moment longer.
I hurried down to the cafeteria before everyone else that even the servers were surprised to see me this early in the cafeteria. Luckily the menu was rather appetizing. I quickly picked a tray at the food stance and greeted the servers while they dished out a portion and smiled at me. In no time I could hear chatters of people coming into the cafeteria and soon it was filled with students. I took a seat at my usual table and munch on my food slowly.
This time the cheerleaders took the table close to me. Alex is the leader of the cheer squad with Becca and Caroline as her sidekicks. They were all in my class and the top chicks in the school. The guys in the football team are always around the cheerleaders. Bryan is the star player of the team alongside Eddy and Damon all from my class. I was halfway done with my meal when Jimmy came with his tray to my table and took the seat next to me.
I almost got choked on the food due to the shock. I kept wondering if I was ill-lucked. He saw other empty tables why pick the one I was at. The saddened look on my face could tell how worried I was. I have kept a low profile all this while and avoided any attention whatsoever and never participated in any activity or function in the school so people won't notice me but my excellent grades sold me out and that made me the school nerd no one wants to associate with.
He said hello! Bringing me back from my thoughts then smiled at me casually. I continued with my meal when he spoke again. I did not catch your name he said calmly. It's Keira I said quickly trying to avoid further questions. I stood up and was about taking the leftovers to the waste bin when the voice of the principal came through the loudspeakers.
Good day! he greeted. Starting next week, extracurricular activities will be added to the school's scheme which will make up twenty percent of your final grade. However, you are to participate in any two activities but for the graduating class, it is mandatory that you participate in at least three activities and join the school theater team.
He continued by saying that special rewards will be given to all outstanding students. Enjoy the rest of the day he says, ending the announcement. There was excitement in the cafeteria so I left silently heading towards the library which happens to be my hideout and study place. That's because only a few students come there especially Fridays. They are either supporting the football team at the field and cheering the cheer squad or watching them practice or hanging out within the school premises. When there is a game school closes by 12noon so everyone could watch the game afterward but when there is no game we close 1:30 pm.
